February. The time of the year when we romantically pour out our undying love and affection towards our significant other with flowers, chocolates, and other gifts on Valentine's Day. Ironically, February seems like a complete contradiction to romanticism, sporting a barren landscape, dead flowers, leafless trees, and a temperature that is usually cold as the dickens. In fact, most animals have even bailed ship in hopes of finding a warmer locale or have buried themselves underground to ride out the rest of winter. Somehow though, Valentine's Day does seem to inspire romance, no matter how you approach it.

GBHS Hall of Fame tickets on sale

Tickets for the Great Bend High School Hall of Fame luncheon are on sale in the Activities Office at Great Bend High School. The luncheon is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at the Highland Convention Center Heritage Room.

USD #112 Central Plains School District has been awarded a grant of $3,509 from the Delta Dental of Kansas Foundation. Each year the Foundation provides grants to Kansas-based oral health programs which emphasize prevention to improve the oral health of Kansas.

St. Mark Lutheran Church Roast Beef Dinner

St. Mark Lutheran Church in Great Bend is hosting its annual "Roast Beef Dinner" from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 26 in the Church Fellowship Hall, 21st and Jackson. The menu includes succulent roast beef, creamy scalloped potatoes, seasoned green beans, hot buttered roll and homemade dessert. Admission is by free will offering. All proceeds go to support the Christian Education programs for the children of the church.

Call for artifacts: Essential Elements exhibit

In conjunction with the upcoming traveling Smithsonian exhibit, "The Way We Worked", the Coronado Quivira Museum is hosting an exhibit tentatively titled Essential Elements: Salt Mining in Rice County. They want to know if you have any artifacts you wish to submit for inclusion in the exhibit.

The 2015 Great Bend Farm and Ranch Expo will be held Wednesday through Friday, April 8, 9, and 10, 2015 in Great Bend. The show is located at the Expo Complex west of town. The show hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on the 8th, 9 a.m.- 7 p.m. on the 9th and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on the 10th with extended hours on Thursday.
