The Great Bend Recreation Commission and Great Bend Senior Center will host a Valentine party from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. A king and queen will be crowned at noon before lunch. The party will start with entertainment by the Park Elementary School music department. Refreshments will be served.
Plans for an open house of the renovated Fine Arts Auditorium at Barton Community College will be discussed at the next BCC Board of Trustees study session, set for 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, in the Seminar Room, F-30 of the Fine Arts Building.
The Great Bend Recreation Commission's Board of Directors will meet at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at the Carl Soden Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. Action items on the agenda include approved revisions to the Employee Handbook and waiving the generally accepted accounting practices. There will be information on winter/spring enrollment, and a time line for summer programs. There will also be a report on the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. The KCAC website shows Great Bend will host the baseball tournament April 30-May 3.
A Chevy Malibu driven by Dana Noble, 43, of Larned slid off West Barton County Road at 12:45 p.m. Thursday, injuring the driver. According to the Barton County Sheriff's Office, Noble was westbound in the 1200 block when the car hit an icy spot and went 415 feet in the ditch, where it came to rest after striking the embankment of the wash. Great Bend Fire Department ambulance transported her to Great Bend Regional Hospital.
Barton Community College music students will present "Kansas History Snapshot: Music from the Civil War" at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13 in the Learning Resource. Catered refreshments will be served.

ELLINWOOD - Star of Hope, an independent Christian organization helping children across the world, announces three major construction projects in Haiti.
The Great Bend High School Speech team placed in 11 events at the Nickerson Speech Tournament. Those placing were Makinna Dykes, Kris Gieck and Ashtin Heath. Ashtin placed in both of her events. Those placing in all of their events and qualifying for the State Speech Championship Tournament in May are Malia Clark, Jesus Sandoval and Carter Sheffield. Carter Sheffield also won the Triathlon Award by placing the highest in all three of his events. He placed 1st in Extemporaneous Speaking, 1st in Serious Solo Acting and 3rd in Impromptu Speaking. The team placed 3rd overall.
