Jo Anne Ford Redburn was released from this life on May 11, 2015. She started this life with her parents, Malcom Afton and Virgie Mae Suchsland Ford on Jan. 31, 1934, in Smith Center. The love of her life, William Franklin Redburn, preceded her in death in 2009. Her family, daughter Cynthia Raeleen and Terry Alan Schmidt of Pittsboro, N. C.; daughter Cheryl Anne Lippert of Great Bend; grandson Ian Michael Lippert of Salina; granddaughter Jessie Rose Lippert of Larned; and great granddaughter Carmella Rose Neal of Larned, will celebrate her life in July with a scattering of her ashes ...

Barbara June (Foster) Meyer 1931 - 2015

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Barbara June (Foster) Meyer, 83, passed away on May 22, at her home in Santa Barbara, Calif. Born July 28, 1931, in Hoisington, she was the daughter of Harry E. and Beulah (Harmon) Foster. She was a graduate of Hoisington High School. On Dec. 24, 1949, she married Alfred L. Meyer of Great Bend. She resided in Great Bend until 1964.

Lila Lee Gilpin 1931 - 2015

HAYS - Lila Lee Gilpin, 84, died June 11, 2015, at the Hays Medical Center. Born March 2, 1931, on the family farm in Barton County, she was the daughter of Chester A. and Florence Helen (Thorpe) Smith. On Jan. 13, 1951, she married her husband of 57 years, Carl G. Gilpin in Great Bend. He died on Dec. 24, 2008. She was a homemaker. She attended business college in Denver, loved to play bridge and dominoes, and enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family. She enjoyed attending church meetings and volunteering at Hays Medical Center.

Chiefs to play at Larned Saturday, Russell Sunday

The Great Bend Chiefs will play a doubleheader at Larned Saturday, May 13 beginning at 4 p.m. The Chiefs will then head north to Russell on Sunday for another twinbill starting at 2 p.m.

Due to wet field conditions and the threat of continued showers and thunderstorms, this weekend's Great Bend Chief's Classic has been cancelled. The VIP Fastpitch softball tournament scheduled for the Great Bend Sports Complex this weekend has also been cancelled due to wet field conditions.

Commission to hold Monday morning meeting

The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes a road vacation in Cheyenne Township, a recognition of Health Department employees Krysten Watkins and Melissa Hagerman, a declaration of a local disaster emergency following heavy rains recently and a resolution establishing a bidding process for county officials.
