Magdalene T. Brack 1924 - 2012

OTIS - Magdalene T. Brack, 88, died Dec. 19 at Hays Medical Center. Born June 27, 1924, in rural Barton County, she was the daughter of Adolph and Minnie (Mater) Tuzicka. In 1942 she graduated from Otis High School. On Sept. 12, 1945, she married Eudale Brack at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Otis. A lifelong resident of Otis, she was the owner and operator of the Otis Cafe from 1968 to 1997. She enjoyed crocheting and flowers and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

CUMBERLAND, Md. - Paul Shook, 87, of Cumberland, Md., passed away Dec. 19 at the Western Maryland Regional Health Center. Born Dec. 4, 1925, in Petersburg, W.Va., he was the son of Casper A. and Susan (Bobo) Shook.

HOISINGTON - Mary Ann Wondra, 74, died Dec. 19 at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. She was born Aug. 26, 1938, in rural Barton County, the daughter of Arthur F. and Mary (Busch) Maneth. She married Bernard Wondra June 8, 1959, at Olmitz. A lifelong Barton County resident, she worked as a teller at Hoisington National bank for 25 years until retirement.

Sunday concert at First UMC celebrates Christmas season

Continuing in its long-standing tradition, the First United Methodist Church of Great Bend will offer a Christmas Concert at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 23, in the church sanctuary. The number of people in need of a food box has increased over the last few years, but fortunately the number of churches and organizations distributing has increased as well, according to members of First United Methodist Church in Great Bend, who recently filled and delivered over 90 boxes.

Snow and ice visit area briefly

Snow blew into Barton County Wednesday night around 7 p.m., starting first with sleet and rain. In Great Bend, the snow didn't begin to stick until after 9 p.m. Icy conditions were a problem for drivers with several sliding off roadways into the ditch. Motorists woke up to a thin blanket of icy snow and began the task of clearing pavement and defrosting and scraping windshields before hitting the streets.
