Elective offices must be filed by Jan. 22

Donna Zimmerman, Barton County Election Officer, has announced the following elective positions are available for the April 2 general election. Council positions are available for the cities of Great Bend, Hoisington, Ellinwood, Claflin, Albert, Galatia, Olmitz, Pawnee Rock and Susank. School board spots will be available for Great Bend, Hoisington and Ellinwood. Spots for the Barton County Board of Trustees and Ellinwood Hospital District Board are also available.

Kitts honored

Judge Hannelore Kitts greets guests at her retirement reception, Friday in a courtroom at the Barton County Courthouse. Kitts has served as a 20th Judicial District Judge for 17 years, since her appointment by Gov. Bill Graves in 1995. Before that, she was an attorney from 1984-95. Kitts said her plans for retirement are to travel and spend more time with her children - "Just what every retired person does."

Great Bend schools received minigrants

Teachers were gifted with nearly $30,000 by the USD 428 Education Foundation when the non-profit group recently awarded 28 minigrants. The amount distributed was higher than any previous year. Successful fund raisers, gifts from benefactors and investments resulted in more money being available than in the past, according to Matt Hiss, president. Education Foundation trustees also agreed to not cap the limit for each minigrant this year. As a result, two applicants received significantly more than $1,500.

Barton women’s golf win fourth straight conference meet, secures third straight conference title

EMPORIA- With two remaining conference meets left to the season, the Barton Community College women's golf team have the luxury of already claiming the conference championship as the Lady Cougars won their fourth straight conference meet this past Monday with a sixty-two stroke victory. Held at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course, Barton held a commanding thirty-nine stroke lead after day one's eighteen holes before widening the gap on Monday's final nine holes.
