EDMOND, Okla. - Elsie Keil Herber, 95, died on Feb. 16, at Edmond, Okla. She was born Dec. 5, 1915, at Galatia, the daughter of Benjamin and Bertha Strecker Keil. She grew up and attended school in the Galatia, Milberger area. She worked for many years as a housekeeper in Russell. On May 9, 1970, she married Raymond Herber and they resided in Wilson, until his death on November 14, 1992. After his death, she moved to Edmond, Okla. to be close to her son and his family.
GREAT BEND - William "Bill" Feist, 78, died Feb. 23 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. He was born May 2, 1932 near Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Barton County, the son of Conrad and Viola (Liebl) Feist.
LARNED -Jaxson Douglas Snodgrass, infant son, died Feb. 22, 2011, at Hays Medical Center, Hays.
LARNED - Lloyd George Lewis, 92, known to many friends and family as "Bus," died Monday afternoon at Hays Regional Medical Center, after suffering a heart attack earlier in the day. Lloyd would have been 93 April 27. The previous Saturday Lloyd had driven to his son's and daughter-in-law's homes to watch his favorite team, the Kansas Jayhawks, play the Colorado Buffaloes.
MCPHERSON - Virginia Edna Marx, 85, died Feb. 21 at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born Oct. 14, 1925.
The Great Bend Recreation Commission's Lifeguard Training Class will be held March 20-25 at Barton Community College. This class is for any individual wanting to become a lifeguard.
The American Red Cross and Great Bend Recreation Commission will offer CPR classes at the GBRC Activity Center, 2715 18th St., on Saturday, March 19. Classes start at 8:30 a.m.

ELLINWOOD - Velma Ann Wornkey, 75, died April 7, 2014 at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital. Born Jan. 3, 1939, in Menlo, she was the daughter of Frank and Rose (Mannebaugh) Moos. On Aug. 31 1957, she married Jerry Wornkey. A lifetime resident of Kansas, she was employed in multiple clerical jobs along with being a good and loving mother.
O'Linda E. Orr, 99, died April 5, 2014 at the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in Larned. Born March 27, 1915 in Susank, she was the daughter of Peter and Katrina (Bitter) Eichman. In 1942, she married William E. Orr in Wichita. He died in 1956. A Great Bend resident since 2000, living in California from 1970 to 2000, she was a beauty operator.
If you have a seventh grader, then you know that he or she just got done taking a standardized test for writing. The good news is our country's education policy recognizes writing is a necessary skill in the information era. The bad news is because of the way we administer and grade the writing standardized tests, we'd have a better idea of whether our kids can write if we looked at their texts.
According to a new UN report, there's good news and bad news about global warming. The good news- it's worse than we thought. Yeah. That's the good news. The bad news- you don't want to know.
