Earth Day 2014 is once again being celebrated in the Golden Belt. This year the event is being hosted by the Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo from noon to 4:00 p.m. Sunday April 27.

GREAT BEND - Jerry R. Tillery, 80, died March 23 at Hospice House, Hutchinson. Born Nov. 20, 1933 at Turon, he was the son of Roy and Sylvia (Lamont) Tillery.
DENNIS - Ralph Elsen, 69, of rural Dennis, died at 3:30 a.m., on March 22, 2014 at his home.

Charlene Marie Weigel, 81, died March 24 at her home in Great Bend. Born May 31, 1932 at Denver, Colo., she was the daughter of James and Grace (Riggen) Klee.
The April 1 election will include appointments to city councils in Great Bend, Hoisington and Ellinwood and to the Ellinwood Hospital District Board of Directors. Great Bend voters will also decide whether to extend a half-cent sales tax, which is set to end on April 1, 2015.
RUSSELL -- The next exhibit at The Deines Cultural Center will be "Art at Your Fingertips," a show of a variety of media by elementary through high school students in USD 407. The show opens this Friday, March 28, with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. at The Deines Cultural Center, located at 820 North Main in Russell. The exhibit will be up through May 9. Admission is free and the center is open Tuesday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

ELLINWOOD - Velma Ann Wornkey, 75, died April 7, 2014 at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital. Born Jan. 3, 1939, in Menlo, she was the daughter of Frank and Rose (Mannebaugh) Moos. On Aug. 31 1957, she married Jerry Wornkey. A lifetime resident of Kansas, she was employed in multiple clerical jobs along with being a good and loving mother.
O'Linda E. Orr, 99, died April 5, 2014 at the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in Larned. Born March 27, 1915 in Susank, she was the daughter of Peter and Katrina (Bitter) Eichman. In 1942, she married William E. Orr in Wichita. He died in 1956. A Great Bend resident since 2000, living in California from 1970 to 2000, she was a beauty operator.
If you have a seventh grader, then you know that he or she just got done taking a standardized test for writing. The good news is our country's education policy recognizes writing is a necessary skill in the information era. The bad news is because of the way we administer and grade the writing standardized tests, we'd have a better idea of whether our kids can write if we looked at their texts.
According to a new UN report, there's good news and bad news about global warming. The good news- it's worse than we thought. Yeah. That's the good news. The bad news- you don't want to know. Because then there's worse news and ultimately, "holy moley, is that an asteroid the size of a mini-mall crushing my house" news.
Be Well Barton County and its Earth Day 2014 partners are hosting the first-ever "Ride for the Planet" bicycle fun ride starting at Great Bend's Brit Spaugh Zoo. The ride is one of more than a dozen Earth Day activities and exhibits offered from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at the zoo to celebrate Earth Day.
