Great Bend High School season football tickets are now available in the activities office at Great Bend High School. Fans who have not had tickets in the past and are interested in reserved seating, please contact the activities office at 793-1560. The first home game is Friday, September 4th at 7:00 p.m. as the Panthers host Leavenworth at Memorial Stadium.

GBHS class of 1975 memorial service

The Great Bend High School Class of 1975 will hold a memorial service for the deceased members of their class at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5, at the Barton County Historical Society church at 85 S Hwy 281, located just south of the Arkansas River Bridge on Highway 281. Family and friends are invited to attend this memorial beginning.

Saint Francis Community Services opens new state-of-the-art residential treatment facility

Saint Francis Community Services (SFCS) will mark the opening of its new state-of-the art Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF) on Sept. 3, with an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5097 W. Cloud Street. Members of the community are invited to the 1:30 p.m. event to view the building and take a guided tour of the facility.

Elm leaf beetles

At this time of year, most of the elm trees in Barton County start looking burnt. Their leaves turn brown and some may fall. Overall, the tree just looks unhealthy and many people start to worry if their tree is going to die. A lot of this damage however, had been caused by a little beetle and its offspring. The elm leaf beetle is an annual problem for the Elms in our area, so I thought that I would share a short column about the little pest, and if you decide to treat, when and what to control them with.
