HOISINGTON - Marlin Ray Hughes, 51, died Dec. 3, 2012 in Barton County as a result of a motorcycle accident. He was born March 14, 1961 at Norton, the son of Howard and Marian (Bennett) Hughes. He married Alicia Day Rodriguez May 1, 2010 at Ulysses. He was a train engineer for Watco Inc. Marlin was a Great Bend and Hoisington resident since 1983. He served in the United States Army.
Doris "Arlene" Bigham, 89, formerly of Great Bend, died Dec. 1 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice-St. Francis in Wichita. She was born the daughter of Roy and Nellie (Stump) Van Cleave on March 18, 1923 in Pawnee County near Larned. In 1943, Arlene and Phillip Eugene Bigham were united in marriage in Denver, Colo. Together they celebrated 32 years of marriage. She was a loving mother and grandmother that touched many lives. All that knew Arlene loved her dearly.
Abend Brot or a German Evening Supper will once again be offered by the Ellinwood Community Historical Society during the Kristkindlmart in Ellinwood on Dec. 6 It will begin in late afternoon until 6 p.m.
The Great Bend High School A Cappella Choir will host a garage sale from 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Panther Activity Center. Items include appliances, computers, household items, clothing and everything in between.

"Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" based on Mark Twain's classic will be presented at 7:30 p.m. this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 13, 14 and 15, in the school's theatre. It's been years since I used AOL for any kind of meaningful email but I can't bring myself to close the account. I keep thinking that somewhere in my cyber past there's an old friend about to reach out - and all he has is my AOL address.
To call the grotesque drubbing suffered by the Democratic Party in the midterms monumental, is like referring to the surface of the sun as warm. The scene was so grisly, acutely sensitive Democrats (most of them) were forced to avert their eyes or risk anaphylactic shock.
