Oration Contest winners

Speaking about "A Person Who Has Overcome," two local orators placed at a speech contest in Dodge City. The first place winner was Leah Stein, center, a 7th grader from Dodge City. The second place winner was Marcie Schartz, right, a sixth grader from Holy Family School in Great Bend, and the third place winner was Sarah Hammeke, left, a sixth grader from Ellinwood. The contest was sponsored by the Modern Woodmen of America, a fraternal financial services organization.

'Shirley's Koi'

Barton Community College art instructor Steve Dudek took home a cash award at the 44th annual Smoky Hill Art Exhibition for his watercolor painting of a Japanese koi fish titled "Shirley's Koi." The juror for the show was Stephen Gleissner, who is the chief curator for the Wichita Art Museum. The exhibit is at the Hays Arts Council Gallery until June 6.

Responses to Boston reveal beliefs

As you are aware, we have suffered an attack on hundreds of innocent victims in America at the Boston Marathon. The scene, as I watched it, was almost surreal. People down on the race track which was full of blood and even body parts. First responders and volunteers rushed in to take down barricades in order to render aid.

Christian Motorcycle Association plans Bikes & Blues Rally

The Christian Motorcyclists Association invites everyone to meet in the City Park in Macksville on May 4, for the fourth annual Macksville Bikes & Blues Rally. The event starts at noon with a prayer and the CMA's "Run for the Son" ride. There will be live music, food venders and camping available in the park.

Dancers step their way to honors

Dancers from Euphoria Dance Centre in Great Bend were awarded 11 Elite Top First Awards and 19 Top First Awards in the Talent on Parade dance competition on April 11–April 14 in Overland Park. In addition, four dancers, Jewelia Depperschmidt, Daehlyn Ellis, Shaylee Patterson and Kaitlyn Pohlman received Top Starz invitations to compete at the Talent on Parade National Competition, June 25 – 30 in Overland Park.

Pheasants Forever is helping to publicize a meeting for landowners interested in learning more about the potential listing of the lesser prairie-chicken (LPC) as a threatened or endangered species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).
