Crime Stoppers seeks information on the theft of a 2005 Diamond T trailer. Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said it was stolen April 25 or 26 from behind a residence at 3010 17th in Great Bend.
Enrollment is now open for the Summer Fun Program at Sunflower's Incredible Years Preschool where youngsters can enjoy the balance of class time and play time, Coordinator Cathy Estes said. The six-week program is available to any child age 2-and-a-half to 5 years.
Two Brown Mackie College occupational therapy assistant students spent four days in late April involved with the therapeutic-riding program at Rosewood Ranch. While the ranch has welcomed dozens of visitors to observe its award-winning program over the years, OTA students Kelley Hulteen and Barbara Berg are the first to make it part of their college curriculum by visiting April 23-26.
Oversized "birdhouses" are slowly popping up throughout town as part of the Great Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau's scene byway promotion. Now stores along K-96 have collaborated to unveil their birdhouses at the same time, Community Coordinator Christina Hayes said.
More than 100 people were involved in Barton Community College's EMT Field Ops Day on Saturday. Students from the EMS, Medical Assistant, and Criminal Justice programs; instructors, volunteer patients; and local law enforcement and emergency medical service personnel were on hand to create lifelike emergency scenarios designed to put the students' skills to the test and mimic the high stress situations they might encounter in the field.
The Great Migration Rally will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Participants start at Quivira National Wildlife Refuge and "migrate" the Wetlands and Wildlife Scenic Byway to the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, stopping at three points and acquiring cards worth points along the route. Lunch will be served at the Dozier Winery.
Barton Community College, in conjunction with the Russell Arts Council, will host a second session for auditions for the upcoming summer musical production of Gilbert & Sullivan's satirical opera "Pirates of Penzance," 6 p.m. Monday, May 14 in the Ruppenthal Middle School Auditorium, 400 North Elm St., Russell.
Dr. Mike Malone, veterinarian to the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo, examines the zoo's bald eagle, last Wednesday at the zoo. The eagle was dusted with powder, which deter mites, while zookeepers were busy adding new tree branches to its enclosure. Although the bird was none too happy, it was safely back in its enclosure a short time later.

TOPEKA-Hoisington High School was recognized as one of ten Kansas schools and one school district receiving the Promising Practice in Character Education Awards last week.
HESSTON- The Hesston College community celebrated the academic accomplishments of 167 graduates during the commencement ceremony May 6. Joe Manickam, a 1987 Hesston College graduate presented the commencement address "Back to Basics," based on the college's 2011-12 theme verse from Micah 6:8.
The Great Bend Recreation Commission's 2013-14 audit will be presented for approval at the next GBRC Board meeting, set for 4 p.m. Monday at the Carl Soden Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. There will also be an executive session for the discussion of administrative personnel evaluation.
I continue to be amazed at the excellence woven into the fabric of our schools. As my contact with our school system here in Hoisington expands, I have been able to see some of the thoughts, plans and processes of education in action. The Great Bend Seventh-day Adventist School is again selling H&S citrus fruit as its annual fundraiser. The navel oranges and pink grapefruit are available during the first sale which arrives Dec. 7-8. In January the navels and grapefruit are again available but the main feature of the January order is the Honeybell tangelo, which is a specialty fruit. The January order will be available Jan. 18-19. The H&S fruit is handpicked, packed, and shipped within a week with no artificial color or ripening.

VICTORIA - An Ellinwood woman was taken to Hays Medical Center after the compact car she was driving hit a deer carcass, at 5:52 a.m. Friday on Interstate 70, 2 miles east of Victoria in Ellis County.
The Barton County Sheriff's Office spent much of Thursday responding to vehicle vs deer accidents.

Gentiva Hospice will sponsor a program, "The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease," for those who are or know someone who is affected by Alzheimer's disease, at 1:15 and 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 13, at the Carl Soden Recreation Building-Burnside Room, 1214 Stone Street. The program provides information on detection, causes and risk factors, stages of the disease, treatment, and much more. Tips for dealing with the holidays will be discussed.
