Shirley Ann Peters, 83, died May 23 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born April 1, 1928 in Ulysses, she was the daughter of Lamont and Marcella (Crebs) Rowland. On April 5, 1991 she married G. Darrell Peters in Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1945, coming from Burrton, she was a secretary and bookkeeper for Peters Drilling Company.

WOODLAND PARK, Colo. - Melinda Thomas, 59, former Hays resident, died May 19, at Pikes Peak Hospice of Colorado Springs, Colo. Born Oct. 27, 1951, in Hays, she was the daughter of Severin S. and Marie (Riedel) Leiker. In 1969, she graduated from Marian High School in Hays. On June 4, 1976, she married Dale L. Thomas in Kansas. She was a homemaker. She made her home in Woodland Park, Colo. and spent a number of months of the year in Alamo, Texas. OLMITZ - Joyce Ann Bitter, 70, died May 23 at her home in Olmitz. Born Aug. 17, 1940 in Barton County, she was the daughter of Frank and Isabel (Gerritzen) Riedel. On July 16, 1960 she married Willard D. Bitter in Olmitz. He died Sept. 3, 1985. A lifetime resident of Olmitz, she was a retired housekeeper for Clara Barton Hospital.

The Barton Community College campus and Center for Adult Education will be closed Monday, May 30, in observance of Memorial Day. The college will resume regular summer hours on Tuesday.
The educational program "Vitamin D - Sunshine to Supplements" will be presented at 1 p.m. Friday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave.
Barton Community College's Center for Adult Education will recognize the 2010-11 GED students who have passed the General Education Development test. The students will be honored in a graduation ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the college's Fine Arts Auditorium.
The 3rd annual Kans for Kids Golf Tournament was another outstanding success for the organization. There were 24 teams and 96 golfers that participated in the tournament as they opened their hearts for four Barton County boys living with childhood cancer.

ELLINWOOD - A benefit fundraiser poker tournament will be held for 11-year-old Kadin White, who is suffering from acute lympoblastic leukemia, beginning at 1 p.m. on Feb. 23 at the Ellinwood American Legion, 117 N. Santa Fe. White also has Down Syndrome and has an infection. He is in Wesley Medial Center in Wichita.
The Barton County Fair Association announced Thursday the signing of county group Parmalee to perform at this year's Barton County Fair. Parmalee will perform on Friday, July 11, with special guest the Jared Daniels Band.

HUTCHINSON - Betty L. Nairn, 84, died Feb. 17, 2014 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.
The Clara Barton Hospital Foundation is currently seeking applicants for their 2014 healthcare career scholarships. Each year the Foundation desires to present several individuals with scholarships. Scholarship amount varies with the merits of the application and funds available from the endowments. The four scholarships to be awarded are: Jonathan Witt Scholarship, Sadie Stalcup Scholarship, Verda Lane Nursing Scholarship and Dr. Robert Moore Scholarship. Application deadline for all scholarships is April 1, 2014.
