DURANT, Iowa - Gary M. "Coach" DeLong, 73, died on Jan. 4, 2016, at his home. Born Oct. 2, 1942, in Cedarvale, he was raised by his loving mother Doris (Hampton) Gray. In 1960, he graduated from Claflin High School, then graduated with his teaching degree from Fort Hays State College in Hays. On April 12, 1969, he married Dixie Ann Hertach in Claflin.

Bernard Richard "Bernie" Schenk, 91, died Jan. 4, 2016, at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was born Oct. 15, 1924, at Olmitz, the son of William and Emily (Spitzka) Schenk. He married Mary Jo Riedel May 20, 1953, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Olmitz. They were residents of Olmitz for 36 years, moving to Great Bend in 1989. From 1951 to 1980, Mr. Schenk served as a rural mail carrier at Olmitz. Following his retirement from the postal service, he became Knights of Columbus Insurance Field Agent for the Western Kansas Agency, providing insurance needs to brother Knights ...

Kansas issues revised fish consumption advisories

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) are issuing revised fish consumption advisories for 2016. The advisories identify types of fish or other aquatic animals that should be eaten in limited quantities or, in some cases, avoided altogether because of contamination. General advice and Internet resources are also provided to aid the public in making informed decisions regarding the benefits as well as the risks associated with eating locally caught fish from Kansas waters.

Curtis S. Werner Sr. 1959 - 2015

LYONS - Curtis S. Werner Sr., 56, died Jan. 2, 2016, at his residence in Lyons. Born Dec. 10, 1959, in Ellinwood, he was the son of Wayne Joseph and Julia A. Bever Werner. A lifetime resident of Rice County, having lived in Lyons, Chase, Raymond and Great Bend, he attended the Chase/Raymond School System. He worked at the Rice County Highway Department in road maintenance. On Feb. 12, 1977, he married Janie Martinez in Chase.

GBRH welcomes New Year's baby

Each year, the staff at Great Bend Regional Hospital wait anxiously to see which expecting mother will deliver the first baby of the new year. For 2016, the first baby was born over the weekend to Jarret and Katie Knieling of Rush Center. Their new daughter, Remi Mae Knieling, was born at 1:50 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2, weighing 8 pounds 5 ounces and measuring 20 inches long.
