ELLINWOOD -- This week Crime Stoppers of Barton County turns its attention to Ellinwood. During June, the golf course was vandalized and a utility trailer was stolen in town. Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings, Crime Stoppers spokesman, asks anyone with information about any crime to call Crime Stoppers to leave an anonymous tip.
A team of Rosewood Services Inc. employees raised nearly $1,500 during this summer's Barton County Relay For Life event, which was held June 8 at the Barton County courthouse square in downtown Great Bend. It was the first year that Rosewood formed a team, which was cause for special recognition by Barton County Relay For Life. Organization representatives Kandi Wolf and Mariann Shook presented a certificate of appreciation to Heart Strong team members on June 28, fittingly at the Rosewood Memorial Garden.

ABILENE - Duckwall-ALCO Stores Inc. (Nasdaq:DUCK), which specializes in providing products for everyday life in small-town America, announced at its June 27 annual meeting of shareholders that the company's name will officially change to ALCO Stores Inc. An amendment to the Articles of Incorporation was approved at the meeting. ALCO Stores also plans to change its ticker symbol on NASDAQ to "ALCS." Both the name change and the change in ticker symbol will be effective as of July 6.
NEWTON - The Great Bend Braves swept a Class A American Legion doubleheader against Newton on Sunday afternoon after McPherson, which was scheduled to be part of a triangular with Newton and Great Bend, had to back out.

GREAT BEND -- Helen A. Barraclough, 83, died July 2, 2012 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Jan. 24, 1929, at Birdsboro, Pa., she was the daughter of George and Anna Marie (Swarmer) Fisher. On May 18, 1957, she married Richard Barraclough at Purcell, Okla. He died Feb. 2, 1994. The couple lived in National City, Calif., before moving to Great Bend in 1968, where she held positions as a waitress for Starlite Supper Club, a clerk at K-Mart, and owned Barraclough Liquor Store.
GARDEN CITY - Morgan Ruth Roark, infant, was stillborn on June 30, 2012, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
WICHITA - Howard K. Sorensen died June 28, 2012. Born in Westbrook, Minn., on April 4, 1918, he was the son of Jim and Janet Sorensen (Rhodes). He was raised by his father and his stepmother, Mable Sorensen, nee Nelsen, his mother having died when he was an infant. In 1941 he married Claire Willis. With Howard's seminary training in Fort Worth, Texas, Memphis, Tenn., and Kansas City, he and Claire served in Baptist churches in Velma, Okla., Basehor, Pawnee City, Neb., Sterling, Hugoton, Pleasant Valley (Wichita), Meade, and Tribune; and in the area ministry for the Kansas Baptist Convention ...
Their combined experience is nearly half a century; they've worked under 17 different principals in six different schools; and they have finely tuned the art of multi-tasking.

PRATT - Laura Viola "Vi" Wagner, 79, died July 6, at South Wind Hospice in Pratt. Born Sept. 1, 1934, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Cash and Nellie Doty. On Jan. 30, 1959, she married Theodore (Nubbin) Heiter at Miami, Okla. He preceded her in death. She later married Bruce Wagner on May 23, 1986. He survives. She worked as a clerk at Crick's and also cooked for USD 382 and Pratt Regional Medical Center for a number of years. Her family was her passion.
James A. Norvell, 91, of Great Bend, died Sunday morning in Bartlesville, Okla. James spent his last few months at his son Brian's Bartlesville home. James Alfred Norvell was born the son of Ross and Georgie Fry Norvell on Sept. 14, 1922, in Piney, Ark. He grew up in various places until entering the United States Navy during World War II. During his service he served on various vessels and was present for the Allied Invasion of France. After his military service James went to western Kansas to do farm work. FREDONIA - Tom Stephen Welton, 67, a resident of Fredonia, formerly of Hoisington, and El Dorado, died July 5, at Fredonia Regional Hospital. Born Aug. 7, 1946, in Great Bend, he was the son of Donald E. and Mable (Roche) Welton. Tom was a graduate of Hoisington High School and received a bachelor's degree from Emporia State University. He was a retired office manager for Automotive Specialists in El Dorado.
HAYS - Louise Rohr, 99, Hays, died Friday, July 4, at the Hays Good Samaritan Society.
TULSA, Okla. - Emanuel Boger, 95, died July 7, 2014 at St. Francis Hospital, Tulsa, Okla.
