Connie Sue Starks 1962 - 2012

Connie Sue Starks, 50, died Dec. 22 at her home in Great Bend. Born Feb. 7, 1962 in Hays, she was the daughter of Gene and Beatrice (Southerland) Parks. On June 10, 1984 she married Terry Starks in Hutchinson. A resident of Great Bend for 19 years, coming from Hutchinson, she was a homemaker.

Terri Lynn McCord 1958 - 2012

Terri Lynn McCord, 54, died Dec. 23 at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. Born March 20, 1958 in Memphis, Tenn., she was the daughter of William and Barbara Donaldson. On Aug. 27, 1976 she married Larry McCord in Salem, Ark. A resident of Great Bend since 1983, coming from Ash Flat, Ark., she was a homemaker and Early Childhood Special Education Para and bus driver for Unified School District #428 in Great Bend.

GBHS EV race team featured in state magazine

On Sept. 27, Great Bend High School's electric vehicle (EV) team competed against other area high schools in the Kansas High Plains ElectroRally in Hays. It was the culmination of several months of planning, designing, building and testing an electric vehicle. Big-hearted Grinch

The Grinch gets his nose pinched by Evelyn Essmiller at the Food Bank of Barton County on Friday afternoon, while he places a furry hand atop the head of Bob Essmiller. The husband-and-wife Food Bank Board co-chairs and the Grinch are joined by Food Bank manager Jenny Gordy. In true Grinch fashion, the green guy delivered more than 100 food items in trash bags. The food was donated by Rosewood Services employees who conducted a food drive this month. Starring as the Grinch was Rosewood employee Ric Loiland.

William Francis "Bill" Maneth, 81, died Jan. 16, 2015, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born March 13, 1933, at Great Bend, the son of William Leo and Mary Teresa (Mauler) Maneth. He married Kay Ellen Dorfshaffer Aug. 24, 1957, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend. A lifetime Great Bend resident, he worked for various retail firms around Great Bend as a counter parts man, retiring from Great Bend Farm Equipment in 1996.

Joan Charles, 84, died Jan. 5, 2015, at her home in Great Bend. She was born Dec. 2, 1930, at Oswego, the daughter of Clyde and Evelyn (Claxton) Morain. She was a butcher at Don's Food Mart, Great Bend. Ms. Charles was a long-time Great Bend resident, also residing in McKinney, Texas, and Hutchinson.

She was born April 19, 1935, at St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend, to Arthur and Bessie (Nordman) Tammen of Albert. She grew up on a farm south of Albert and attended District II Country School.
