Thirty years ago, the black-footed ferret was brought back from the dead. Fort Hays State University's Sternberg Museum of Natural History will celebrate the anniversary of that discovery with a full day of programs beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 7.

The Soroptimists of Great Bend, a women's club designed to promote the education and advancement of other women, is hosting an all-you-can-eat chili and chicken noodle soup supper from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 10 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Great Bend. Tickets are $5 per person and kids under 5 years of age eat for free. Dinner includes all-you-can eat chili and/or chicken noodle soup, veggies, iced tea or water, and a homemade dessert. Tickets are available in advance from Coldwell Banker Real Estate (10th & McKinley) or at the door.
The Rice County Historical Society is celebrating Veterans Day and honoring all who have served by presenting Tyler Whorton. Currently the Production Supervisor at Hospira in McPherson, Tyler is also an Iraq War Veteran. He will be speaking on the topic "From the Farm to the Front Lines: My Journey from the Kansas Wheat Fields to Iraq".

Margaret Reichuber will celebrate her 90th birthday with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. on Nov. 13 at the American Legion, 204 North Main, in Hoisington. Hosts for the event will be her children Edd and Aileen Reichuber of Hutchinson, Kenny Reichuber of Burrton, Dick and Mary Jane Reichuber of Hoisington and Gary and Janie Reichuber of Wichita. She has 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Preceptor Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met at Oct. 18 at the home of Jeanne Schmitt. Susan Brown was co-hostess. President Janis Link led the meeting.
Natasha Marie Bjork Avila and Jarod Micheal Beneke were united in marriage on Sept. 24 at the Community Christian Church in Great Bend in a double ring ceremony officiated by pastor Jack Sweany. Mother of the bride is Jennifer Bjork Adams of Great Bend. Parents of the groom are Corky and Kathy Bloom of Hutchinson.
Addison Baxter, a senior at GBHS, has been selected for the Kansas Music Educators Association District Honor Jazz Band which meets this Saturday in Dodge City. Members were selected through recorded auditions. After a day of rehearsal, the jazz band and middle school band and choir will give a concert at the Dodge City Middle School auditorium starting at 3:45 p.m. There is a small admission fee, and the public is invited to attend.
League of Women Voters of Great Bend will hold the monthly meeting at noon on Tuesday at The Club at Stone Ridge. Lunch will be from the menu.
Richard and Kathy Ahlvers will celebrate their 50th anniversary from 3 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 19 with a reception at the Great Bend Best Western courtyard, 2920 10th Street. The couple requests no gifts.
CLAFLIN - Lyle Kent McDermed, 78, was born Jan. 17, 1936, in Lyons, to Carvin and Wilma (Kent) McDermed. Lyle passed away April 6, 2014. Lyle spent his childhood in Kansas where he was a graduate of Claflin High School and Emporia State University.
