HOISINGTON - Mari Jo Ray, 77, died Jan. 3, 2015, at Almost Home, Great Bend. She was born Sept. 20, 1937, in Great Bend, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Schneweis) Peschka. Mari Jo attended Hoisington High School. She worked as a telephone operator, and was also a police dispatcher, city cashier, city clerk and city manager.
James A. Lofland, 62, died Jan. 3, 2015, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. He was born April 27, 1952, at Great Bend, the son of James R. and Joyce L. (Mohr) Lofland. He married Karen Sander Feb. 23, 1974, at Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, Jim was a welder for McDonald Tank and Equipment Inc. for more than 40 years, and also formerly owned and operated Lofland Landscape Turf & Irrigation.
TOPEKA - John J. Gilkison, 92, former resident of Larned, for over 70 years, passed away in Topeka on Jan. 1, 2015, four days short of his 93rd birthday. Born on Jan. 5, 1922, in Larned, he was the son of Charles A. and Olga Sjogren Gilkison. In 1939, he graduated from Zook High School and attended Kansas State University for two years.
Anthony C. "Tony" Huslig, 47, died Dec. 31, 2014, at his home in Great Bend. Born Sept. 18, 1967, in Pratt, he was the son of Bernard Louis "Hus" and Donna Joan "Jo" (Rose) Huslig. He married Kelly Adams in Great Bend. They later divorced. Raised in Great Bend and living in Kansas City until moving back to Great Bend in 2010, he was a Network Program Engineer.
RUSSELL - Doris Amelia Steinert, 83, of Russell, Kansas, died on December 29, 2014, at the Ellsworth County Medical Center in Ellsworth.
RUSSELL - Eugene Steinert, 89, of Russell, died on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Society in Ellsworth.
Marvin J. Hipp, 61, died Jan. 3, 2015, at Lake Point Assisted Living, Wichita. He was born Sept. 1, 1953, at Great Bend, the son of Joseph Lawrence and Thelma Eileen (Fenn) Hipp. He worked for Gibson, Titus and Stafford and then was the parts counter manager for Straub International, for more than 30 years combined. He was a longtime Great Bend resident, recently living in Wichita.
HOISINGTON - Emerson J. Davis, 80, passed away Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, at the Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. He was born March 2, 1934, on the homestead in rural Galatia, Kan., the son of David and Lena (Hester) Davis. He attended school at Hoisington and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Newkirk on Oct. 8, 1953. He was a truck driver for Kansas Brick and Tile for many years, later working for Albion Township.
HOISINGTON - John Edward Stoss, 50, died Jan. 1, 2015, at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita. He was born Aug. 28, 1964, the son of Edward John and Darlene (Doonan) Stoss. He was a 1983 graduate of Hoisington High School. A lifetime Hoisington resident, John was a farmer and had previously ran the maintainer for South Homestead Township. He had also driven a bus for USD 431, Hoisington.
The Barton County Sheriff's Office has arrested a man suspected of holding a woman again her will overnight on Jan. 1-2 and raping her.
Four people were injured after a pickup slid off a county road early on New Year's Day, just east of Great Bend.
The Big 12 has seven of its' 10 team in bowl games. Does that tell us that the Big 12 is a powerful football conference? Not really. Mostly it tells us that there are too many bowls, though I would put the Big 12's football prowess right up there with any of the other conferences including the much-ballyhooed Southeastern Conference.
Barton County Sheriff's Office deputies are investigating the first major injury accident of the new year that occurred early on the morning of New Year's Day. The accident occurred Thursday at approximately 2:38 a.m. just east of Great Bend.
The Great Bend City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the City Office, 1209 Williams. The agenda includes a report from Great Bend Chamber of Commerce President Jan Peters, a letter of support for a SeaPort Airlines ticketing and baggage agreement and an a consultant agreement for FAA airport grants regarding a building a fire truck at Great Bend Municipal Airport.
