GBRC hosting Defensive Driving Course

The Great Bend Recreation Commission and Barton County Farm Bureau will be hosting a "Defensive Driving Course" on Monday, Nov. 16 thru Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 5:30-9 p.m. at the Great Bend Activity Center, located at 2715 18th Street. This class will be taught by Steve Billinger, Barton County Sheriff's Department. After participants attend this course, most insurance companies will lower premiums for participants that receive certificates at the end of the class. The Great Bend Recreation Commission will be hosting a "Halloween Party" on Tuesday, Oct. 27 from 1-2 p.m., at the Senior Center located at 2005 Kansas Avenue. Dress up in costume, if you would like, and join friends for an afternoon of spooky fun, refreshments, and entertainment by a Jefferson grade school class. Dr. William Doyle Smith 1940 - 2015

Dr. William Doyle Smith, 75, died Oct. 20, 2015, at his home in Great Bend. Born Sept. 23, 1940, in Sapulpa, Okla., he was the son of Frankie Anderson and Bertha (Holt) Smith. On March 22, 1970, he married Carol Wenzel in North Little Rock, Ark. Dr. Smith was a Great Bend resident and the pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church since 1972. He was president of the Kansas-Nebraska Convention of Southern Baptists for two terms, served on the Board of Trustees for the Midwestern Theological Seminary, was a founding board member of Webster Conference Center in Salina, and ...

Helen Virginia (Pitman) McCormick 1931 - 2015

SYLVIA - - Helen Virginia (Pitman) McCormick died on Oct. 18, 2015. Born on Jan. 29, 1931, in Inglewood, Calif. she was the daughter of Earl and Thelma Pitman. In 1949, she graduated from Sweetwater High School. On Nov. 14, 1954, she married Walter James McCormick. They resided in Chula Vista Calif. until 1960 when they moved to Kansas. Helen retired from Cessna after 30 years. After she retired she went to work for Mennonite Manor in South Hutchinson.
