Update on hit and run

(Oct. 12) A hit-and-run accident occurred at approximately 8 p.m. Saturday on the U.S. 281 Bypass. The Great Bend Police Department reported a woman was hit and was being flown to a Wichita hospital via air ambulance with critical injuries.

Breast care, treatment offered to central Kansas

When Ana Refinetti, M.D., came to St. Rose Ambulatory & Surgery Center she discovered women were going out of town for breast care and treatment. But she also knew St. Rose had many of the resources to accommodate these patients.

Lodema “Dee” Pelster 1932 - 2013

Lodema "Dee" Pelster, 81, died Oct. 12 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. She was born Feb. 9, 1932, at Parsons, the daughter of James LeRoy and Gertrude (Bennett) Garrett. She married Robert LeRoy Pelster Dec. 22, 1953, at Miami, Okla. He died Aug. 25, 1996. A Great Bend resident since 1953, coming from Cherryvale, she was a homemaker.

​Larry Robert Ruble 1939 - 2013

Larry Robert Ruble, 73, died Oct. 11 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Nov. 30, 1939, in Great Bend, he was the son of Frank and Helen (Schwartz) Ruble. In 1958 he graduated from Great Bend High School. On April 3, 1958, he married Vickie Boos at Alva, Okla. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was employed by Marlette Homes for 18 years, GBI for 23 years and was a custodian for USD 428 for 10 years until his retirement.

Randall S. Phillips, 55, died Oct. 9 at his home in Great Bend. Born Oct. 12, 1957, at Great Bend, he was the son of Dale V. and Helen L. (Powers) Phillips. A resident of Great Bend, living in California for 25 years, he was employed by Wal-Mart as a stocker. He loved to golf, target shoot, games, dogs, and was an avid reader and computer whiz.

Dewey Daniel Ball, 86, died Oct. 11 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Oct. 24, 1926, at Japton, Ark. the son of Jacob Asbury and Callie (Kirk) Ball. He married Kathrine Louise Haworth Dec. 15, 1946, at Winfield. She died Nov. 25, 2012. A Great Bend resident for 58 years, coming from Grenola, Kan., and Japton, Ark., he worked for R. J. Allison, Energy Fuels, NRG and Signal Fuels as an L.P. Gas manager.

Richard G. “Dick” Blazek 1931 - 2013

Richard G. "Dick" Blazek, 81, lifelong Great Bend resident, died Oct. 11 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, after a brief illness. He was born Dec. 25, 1931, at Barton County, to Edward and Bertha Therresa (Kratky) Blazek. He graduated from Stafford County Public Schools in 1946. On Oct. 3, 1955, he married Juanita M. Beliel at Raton, N.M. Dick worked as a plumber for Martin Yager Plumbing and Corrigan Plumbing and Heating for several years, and then worked as propane driver for the Great Bend Co-Op Association for many years prior to his retirement.

Marsh Musings

Big changes are occurring in the marsh. I have been traveling a bit – went to Louisiana for a alligator and to Wyoming for a cow elk. Hope to draw a bull tag next year. It gets a little more difficult each year – this is my fourth year to draw only the cow tag. Elk is certainly a elegant addition to the table and I retrieved 286 pounds of meat. Bow hunting is a lot of fun.

Two area communities to receive funding for housing, infrastructure

TOPEKA – Ten Kansas communities, including Lyons and Stafford County, will share $2.1 million in funding to build moderate-income housing and infrastructure in rural areas. The Moderate-Income Housing Program, an initiative funded by the State of Kansas and administered by Kansas Housing Resources Corporation, works to help cities and counties develop multi-family rental units, single-family for-purchase homes, and water, sewer and street extensions in communities with populations fewer than 60,000 people.
