Sister Marietta Urban, 83, died March 1 in the Dominican Sisters' Convent Infirmary in Great Bend. Born Oct. 20, 1928, in Loretto as Viola Margaret Urban, Sister Marietta was the daughter of the late Jacob and Catherine Suppes Urban. She entered the Dominican Sisters' Community in Great Bend on Aug. 31, 1942, and pronounced her first vows on Aug. 13, 1946. She celebrated 65 years of religious profession in 2011.
ELLINWOOD - Clara Lee Schlochtermeier, 75, died March 1 at Ellinwood District Hospital. Born July 29, 1936 in Ellinwood, she was the daughter of Pete Schlochtermeier and Susanna Caroline Debes Schlochtermeier. She was a graduate of Ellinwood High School. A long-time resident of Ellinwood, formerly of Larned and Kinsley, she was a Nurses Aide at St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend.
HAYS - Bernice Rupp, 83, died Feb. 29 at St. Francis South Campus Hospital on Indianapolis, Ind. Born April 20, 1928, in Emmeram, she was the daughter of August V. and Marie (Always) Weigel. On Nov. 9, 1948 she married Linus J. Rupp in Emmeram and later separated. She was a graduate of Victoria High School. A resident of Colorado and Wyoming before moving back to Hays in 1977, she was a waitress most of her life, working at the Golden Ox and Everybody's restaurants both in Hays. She retired in 1994. SPRINGFIELD, ORE. - B. Jean (Gallon) Vollmer, 82, died Jan. 27, 2012. Born Oct. 23, 1929 in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Elmer and Edna (Almquist) Gallon. In 1947 she graduated from Great Bend High School. She was employed as a sales associate at Sears. She was a resident of the Lane County area in Oregon for 43 years.
Connie Schneweis, 64, died March 2 at her Great Bend residence. She was born Aug. 17, 1947, at Great Bend, to Albert Anton and Sarah Josephine (Smith) Maes. She married Larry L. Schneweis June 14, 1969, at Holy Name Catholic Church, Bushton. He survives. Mrs. Schneweis was a Great Bend, Kansas resident since 1969, coming from rural Bushton.
Dustin W. "Bubba" Buess, 22, died March 2 at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck, N.D., as the result of an automobile accident. He was born May 24, 1989, at Great Bend, the son of Rodney Wayne Buess and Stephanie Marie Morrison. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was a roughneck for Nomac Drilling.

PRATT - Laura Viola "Vi" Wagner, 79, died July 6, at South Wind Hospice in Pratt. Born Sept. 1, 1934, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Cash and Nellie Doty. On Jan. 30, 1959, she married Theodore (Nubbin) Heiter at Miami, Okla. He preceded her in death. She later married Bruce Wagner on May 23, 1986. He survives. She worked as a clerk at Crick's and also cooked for USD 382 and Pratt Regional Medical Center for a number of years. Her family was her passion.
James A. Norvell, 91, of Great Bend, died Sunday morning in Bartlesville, Okla. James spent his last few months at his son Brian's Bartlesville home. James Alfred Norvell was born the son of Ross and Georgie Fry Norvell on Sept. 14, 1922, in Piney, Ark. He grew up in various places until entering the United States Navy during World War II. During his service he served on various vessels and was present for the Allied Invasion of France. After his military service James went to western Kansas to do farm work. FREDONIA - Tom Stephen Welton, 67, a resident of Fredonia, formerly of Hoisington, and El Dorado, died July 5, at Fredonia Regional Hospital. Born Aug. 7, 1946, in Great Bend, he was the son of Donald E. and Mable (Roche) Welton. Tom was a graduate of Hoisington High School and received a bachelor's degree from Emporia State University. He was a retired office manager for Automotive Specialists in El Dorado.
