American Legion posts to help Great Bend veterans

Military veterans in Great Bend and surrounding areas are invited this week to visit Argonne Post 180, 1011 Kansas Ave., to learn more about the organization. State headquarters staff from the American Legion will be in town Thursday through Saturday to discuss veterans' benefits and service to the community.

'Jungle Bell Rock' program offered at zoo

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will host a free Stop 'N Learn Session at the Brit Spaugh Zoo on Tuesday, Dec. 10. "Jungle Bell Rock" runs for noon to 1 p.m. Zoo Education Coordinator Amber Koch will explain how the "cold-blooded" animals eat, sleep and live. From basking on rocks to hanging from trees, these reptiles can teach humans a thing or two about how they keep warm.

Claflin revitalization plan on BCC agenda

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will meet at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, in room F-30, the "Seminar Room" of the Fine Arts Building. Approval of a revitalization interlocal agreement with the city of Claflin is on the agenda. Similar plans have been in place for several years.

Nina Mae Hale 1931 - 2013

NORMAN – Okla. - Nina Mae Hale passed away on Nov. 30, at Norman Regional Hospital in Norman, Okla. after a brief illness. Born Oct. 25, 1931, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Hazel and George Merten. She grew up in Great Bend and graduated from Great Bend High School. On Jan. 7, 1952 she married Kenneth Hale in Great Bend. They raised two daughters and two sons. In 1972, the family moved to Lindsay, Okla. She worked for Dr. Long, optometrist, and later, for the American Exchange Bank from 1980 until retiring in 2002. She was a devoted mother ...
