Clanton baby girl
Nathan Jay and Shannon Marie Clanton announce the birth of their daughter, Zavannah May Clanton on March 19 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She weighed 6 lbs. 4 oz. and was 18 in long. She has a 5 year old big sister, Taiya Marie Clanton.

Spring Expo $1,000 winner
Chasity Chaney was the winner of the $1,000 shopping spree given away at the Central Kansas Spring Expo which was held last weekend. She will be able to spend the $1,000 with any of the exhibitors participating in the Expo. First Kansas Bank and Stueder Contractors Inc. sponsored the drawing. As this is written, Barton and the surrounding counties missed the rain chances forecast over the weekend. The droughty conditions were made worse by well above normal temperatures and strong winds that further stressed the wheat crop and depleted the precious little moisture received the previous seven days. In spite of this, the majority of wheat in the area would still be rated overall fair to good. However, conditions need to improve soon to salvage an average wheat crop.
University of Kansas grad students attend workshop in Alaska
A Great Bend High School Alum, Alexis Reed, along with 17 other students and faculty from four National Science Foundation Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship programs recently met in Juneau, Ak., for a workshop titled Understanding Rapid Environmental and Social Change in the Arctic: Bridging Traditional Knowledge and Interdisciplinary Science Across IGERTs.

Twenty-two students traveled to the state FBLA competition on March 31 and April 1 in Topeka. The event was held at the Capitol Plaza hotel. Students competed in a variety of business events. Birdhouse Scavenger Hunt winner announced
Tracy Miller of Great Bend is this year's Birdhouse Scavenger Hunt winner of $100. Great Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau chairman Loren Unruh and president Cris Collier personally presented the cash to Miller. The winner was chosen at random from the successfully completed hunts. Learn to prevent falls
The Great Bend Recreation Commission will host "Fall Prevention" at 1 p.m. Friday at the Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. In this free program, Rick Schaffer from the South West Kansas Area Agency on Aging will discuss the five building blocks for preventing or reducing falls in the home and around town.
Program offered on pool, pond care
"Pond Care 101" will be presented 5:30-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, at the Great Bend Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. This free presentation by Shawna Beran includes tips on maintaining a pool or backyard pond. Garret Fitzpatrick, program director for the Great Bend Recreation Commission, said Beran will cover topics such as water care, plants, fish and diseases. There will also be time for questions.

Marie Frances Erb 1926 - 2013
NESS CITY - Marie Frances Erb, 86, passed away at Atrium Medical Center in Corinth, Texas,near her daughter's home. Born on Nov. 14, 1926 in Toronto, she was the daughter of Curtis and Frances Reynard Williams, Sr. A graduate of Fort Hays State University, she was a school teacher, teaching in Woodson and Ness County schools. On June 1, 1950 she married Earl P. Erb in Fayetteville, Ark. He preceded her in death on Sept. 26, 2009.

TOPEKA - Dolores Kufahl, 89, passed away June 17th. Born Jan. 23, 1924 in Wheaton, she was the daughter of Arthur and Dora (Brunkow) Teske. On Jan. 5, 1944, she married Verle Kufahl at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wheaton.
Lillian Josephine Pryor 1907 - 2013
Lillian Josephine Pryor, 105, died June 17, at Deseret Care Center in Pratt. Born July 28, 1907 at West Salem, Wisc. she was the daughter of Fred and Lillian (Weingarten) Seeger. On Dec. 20, 1941, she married Leonard Campbell Pryor in St. John. He preceded her in death in August 1979.
