Senior Volunteers honored for service to elderly

Beverly Davis, Earl Lumpkins and Bernita Degenhardt of Great Bend were honored for their service to the elderly at the February Senior Companion Program in-service meeting held at the Great Bend Senior Center on Aug. 21st. Davis has served 10 years; Lumpkins, nine years and Degenhardt, five years with the Program. Senior Companions offer friendship and assistance with daily living activities to older persons needing help to live independently.

Bill L. Westfall 1931 - 2013

Bill L. Westfall, 82, died Aug. 21 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born April 5, 1931, at Oilton, Okla., to Amos L. and Beulah Mae (Turner) Westfall. He married Lillie "Madge" Ferguson April 5, 1958, at Kinsley. A Great Bend resident since 1934, coming from Oklahoma, he owned and operated Westfall Electric from 1968 until his retirement.

Dorothy O. Soden 1921 - 2013

Dorothy O. Soden, 92, died Aug. 21 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Jan. 24, 1921, at Clay Center, to Richard A. and Dorthea J. (Obenland) Brueggemann. She married Carl Soden Dec. 21, 1946, at Mission. He died May 8, 2008. Mrs. Soden was a Great Bend resident since 1949, coming from Coffeyville. She was a teacher at schools in Morganville, Clay Center, Parsons, Topeka and Coffeyville, as well as St. Patrick Catholic School and Great Bend USD 428 in Great Bend.

Donna Rae (Krier) Hoffman 1947 - 2013

CLAFLIN - Donna Rae (Krier) Hoffman, 66, of Mt. Vernon, Mo., died Aug. 21, at her home. Born Feb. 11, 1947, in Pueblo, Colo., she was the daughter of the late Richard and Myrtle (DeLair) Krier. Donna was a 1965 graduate of Claflin Kansas High School and graduated from West Hills College in San Diego, Calif., where she attended from 1965-1968, earning a degree in Accounting. On Feb. 12, 1997, she married LeRoy J. Hoffman in Claflin. They resided in Claflin until 2000, moving to Mt. Vernon, Mo., to retire. Daryl "Tippy" Ferguson, 52, died Aug. 22 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born April 4, 1961, at Great Bend, to Donald Gene and Opal Ann (McKnight) Ferguson. He married Sharon M. Thompson June 27, 1981, at Great Bend. A lifetime Great Bend resident, he was a dispatcher for Horizon Express.
