Iowa Western wins first title, tops Butler 27-7

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA - In only their fourth football season, the Iowa Western Reivers raised the NJCAA national championship trophy after defeating Butler 27-7 at the UNI Dome on Sunday evening, capping a 12-0 season.

Depperschmidt Family Reunion

The Depperschmidt family reunion was held on Nov. 24 at the Best Western in Great Bend. The family thanks the Best Western for a safe environment for their family get together. Mandy Huntley of Great Bend and Jennifer Wendel of Holcomb provided the cooking. Mary Depperschmidt of Great Bend and Charles Depperschmidt of LaCrosse made the reunion possible. New 24-Hour daycare opens to serve Great Bend employers

A 24-hour childcare center in Great Bend celebrated its grand opening on Friday with a Chamber ribbon cutting at 4:45 p.m., and owner Erika Julian hopes to reach out to area employers as she grows her new business. All The Little Children, currently located at 1416 Broadway in Great Bend, is the only 24-hour licensed daycare in the area. "Businesses who employ evening and overnight help often struggle with high turnover because their staff can't find reliable childcare," Julian says. HOISINGTON - Gloria K Zamarripa, 66, died Jan. 24, 2015, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. She was born July 14, 1948, the daughter of Fred Ray and Alice (Rohr) Kincaid. Gloria married Frank Zamarripa April 4, 1964 at Great Bend. He died May 6, 1989.

Charley Hoffsmith, 67, died Jan. 24, 2015, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, after a long battle with colon cancer. He was born July 4, 1947, at Dighton, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Marie (Orten) Hoffsmith. A long-time resident of Great Bend, he was the owner and operator of Charley's Tree Service.

ELLINWOOD - Sue Elizabeth Ballantine, 67, died Jan. 22, 2015, at Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita. She was born on Feb. 28, 1947, to Donald H. and Violet Ann (Schartz) Ballantine. Sue was a resident of Wichita for 35 years and formerly of Ellinwood, KS. She retired from Boeing in 1998 where she worked for 20 years.
