Prescribed fire workshop to be held in Trousdale

Pheasants Forever, in conjunction with the Natural Resource Conservation Service and K-State Research and Extension is hosting a prescribed fire workshop. The workshop will be held at the Trousdale Methodist Church on Tuesday, Jan. 29th. A $5 registration fee will be charged to each workshop participant. The fee will cover informational materials for each participant to take home as well as lunch.

FHSU Student Recognition Program for 2013 coming to Great Bend

This year's edition of Fort Hays State University's annual 13-city, two-month Student Recognition Program series will begin in Phillipsburg on Monday, Jan. 28, swing into Colorado and Nebraska, and end in Beloit on March 12. The highlight at each event is the recognition of scholarship winners.

Les Hopkins, owner and general manager of Great Bend Farm Equipment, announced today that the dealership is now a Honda Outdoor Power Equipment dealer. Hopkins made the decision to market the Honda lineup because John Deere no longer manufactures and markets residential walk behind and hand held lawn care equipment. Just In Time

A major change in many businesses over the last twenty years was an inventory concept termed "just in time." Instead of maintaining a large inventory of parts and products, the idea was to keep just what you need and have what you are going to need ordered, shipped, and delivered just in time. The transportation and communications infrastructure developed with the advent of computers made this possible. Problems arise when something unpredictable happens; earthquakes and tsunamis in Asia or extreme weather here. "Just in Time" is what we are looking at for this year's wheat crop.

Elective offices must be filed by Jan. 22

Donna Zimmerman, Barton County Election Officer, has announced the following elective positions are available for the April 2 general election. Council positions are available for the cities of Great Bend, Hoisington, Ellinwood, Claflin, Albert, Galatia, Olmitz, Pawnee Rock and Susank. School board spots will be available for Great Bend, Hoisington and Ellinwood. Spots for the Barton County Board of Trustees and Ellinwood Hospital District Board are also available.

Central Kansas Dream Center aiming to bring bicyclists together

Central Kansas Dream Center (CKDC) is interested in creating a community bike rental program that would promote a healthier community and bring people together, and CKDC Executive Director Kimberly Becker and many others are excited about the possibilities. With the efforts being made on Great Bend's walking and biking paths, more residents will be encouraged to walk and ride but may need a bicycle.
