​More than 1,000 gallons of fuel stolen

Police believe $5,000 worth of diesel fuel was stolen over the last month, from rigs parked at Central Power Systems and Service (Detroit Diesel), 625 10th St. The theft was reported Tuesday and is being investigated by the Great Bend Police Department.

False information used at bank

An individual used "false information" to steal thousands of dollars from an individual's bank account, according to Lt. William Browne at the Great Bend Police Department. The alleged theft was reported last Tuesday at Farmers Bank and Trust, 1017 Harrison St. The investigation shows a person misrepresented himself or herself and got money from an individual's account. Loss was $3,587.

Burglars grab laptop and 3 guitars

Crime Stoppers is seeking information about a burglary that occurred between 6:15 and 8:53 p.m. last Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 2507 11th St. Apt. 4 in Great Bend. Police Chief Dean Akings said the doors were locked and it is possible that the burglar has a key.

​Burglary and rape reported

Great Bend Police are investigating a report of a rape at a residence in the 1100 block of Morphy St. Reports show someone entered the residence by force at 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, and that the assailant had a knife or other cutting instrument. A woman in her early 20s was reportedly raped; another woman of similar age contacted the police at 1:58 a.m. and they arrived within three minutes. Evidence was collected, including a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner kit.

Listening, learning, leading

Most people in agriculture know this time of year is meeting season. Everyone from seed and chemical companies to producer groups and government agriculture groups take advantage of this "down" period to educate, inform, and listen. Some meetings are designed to inform those attending while some are designed to listen to those attending. The best meetings do both. Several of these opportunities have occurred here at Barton recently.

GBHS Hall of Fame tickets on sale

Ticket sales for the Great Bend High School Hall of Fame luncheon are available in the Activities Office at Great Bend High School. The luncheon is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at the Highland Convention Center. The 2012 inductees include 1968 graduate, Karla (Bender) Leibham and Bill McKown, class of 1974. Tickets are $15. Those planning to attend, but have not sent an RSVP, or wish to purchase tickets, can contact the Activities Office at 620-793-1560.

Forensics season has successful start

The Great Bend High School Forensics Team traveled to two tournaments, on Feb. 2nd. One group went to Kinsley and the other went to South Barber High School (Kiowa). Both teams placed 4th overall in sweepstakes and competed against approximately 20 different schools at both tournaments. Six students competed at the Kinsley tournament. Three students qualified to finals in the Informative event. Kameko Schultz placed 2nd, Riley Jones placed 3rd and Rebecca Clark placed 6th. In Original Oration event, Clara Kachanes placed 1st qualifiying to the State Championship Tournament and Jesus Sandoval placed 3rd. In Humorous Solo Acting Schultz placed ...

Five arrested in drug warrant sweep

On Tuesday, detectives from the Barton County Sheriff's Office obtained three search warrants for methamphetamine and other illegal drugs.
