Our nation is at war with its foundations

The other day, I watched the address given at the Inaugural Prayer Breakfast. The keynote speaker was Rabbi Jonathan Cahn. I was pleased to see that he had been chosen, because I have listened to and read his work on the Isaiah 9:10 Scripture. This address was just as important.

Lenten Luncheon: Trinity Lutheran on Feb. 20

Trinity Lutheran Church, 2701 24th St., will be the site of the first in a series of six 2013 Lenten Luncheons sponsored by the Barton County Association of Churches. The public is invited to have lunch at the church at noon Wednesday, Feb. 20. The Rev. Jim Strassen is host pastor and the speaker will be Dr. Kevin Baxter, pastor of Foundry Methodist Church. The purpose of these one-hour ecumenical gatherings is to provide an opportunity to gather for personal reflection and spiritual growth during the Lenten season, and to experience fellowship with one another.

April Mae Hart 1974 - 2013

April Mae Hart, 38, died Feb. 13 at her home in Great Bend. Born Sept. 5, 1974, in Lawton, Okla., she was the daughter of Gary and Coleen (Skeen) Hayes. A resident of Great Bend since 2005, coming from Iowa, Minnesota and Missouri, she had previously been a waitress and C.N.A.

J.W. Crabtree 1938 - 2013

J.W. Crabtree, 74, died Feb. 11 at Great Bend Regional Hospital in Great Bend after a brief illness. Born on March 8, 1938 in Risco, Mo., he was the son of Lee and Frances (Gray) Crabtree. On Dec. 14, 1957, he married Myrtle Florence "Flo" Goudie in St. Louis, Mo. She died Jan. 1, 2004. He was employed as a warehouse/terminal worker for Railway Express in St. Louis, Mo., and worked in service stations for the majority of his life.

Judith Elaine Piland 1937 - 2013

Judith Elaine Piland, 75, died Feb. 12 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita. Born Aug. 19, 1937, in Sterling, she was the daughter of Julius and Mildred (Beck) Boepple. On Jan. 28, 1956, she married Basil Loyd Piland in Great Bend. He died on July 27, 2010.

Great Bend Public Library will show the movie "Here Comes the Boom," during Teen Movie Monday. The movie will be shown at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at the library, 1409 Williams St. It is open to all students in grades 7-12.

Gunn named Bank of the West manager

ELLINWOOD - Bank of the West today announced that Freddy Gunn Jr. has been named Bank of the West assistant vice president and branch manager. In his role, Gunn is responsible for the overall operations, customer service, performance and profitability of the branch, as well as community outreach activities. He will be based at the Bank of the West branch located at 19 N. Humboldt Avenue in Ellinwood.
