Great Bend student on Deans Honor Roll for Fort Hays State University

Sarah Jean Neeland, Great Bend, a 2012 graduate of Great Bend High School, has earned a place on the fall 2014 Deans Honor Roll at Fort Hays State University. She is a senior majoring in elementary education. The Deans Honor Roll includes undergraduate students only. To be eligible, students must have enrolled in 12 or more credit hours and have a minimum grade point average of 3.60 for the semester.

How about those hawks?

If you have been out and about during the past couple of weeks, you might be tempted to classify the bird life as somewhat boring. The Bottoms are essentially frozen. Geese have a few spots open, and the ducks are mostly Mallards. I counted 14 eagles on the ice a couple of days ago. They follow the waterfowl with great intensity, and several were feeding on geese carcasses within 50 yards of the resting geese. I always wonder if the geese are upset by watching their cousins become lunch. It is exciting to see the geese launch when the eagles ...

The Wetland Explorer: Eagle Days

One of the more asked about species of birds at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center is the Bald Eagle. Especially this time of year, Bald Eagles can be a regular sight at Cheyenne Bottoms. During the recent Cheyenne Bottoms Christmas Bird Count, participants recorded 57 Bald Eagles, which was an all-time high count for Bald Eagles for the count.
