CAMP PAWNEE - Renovations at Camp Pawnee received a boost recently through a $5,000 grant from The Home Depot Foundation.
The public is invited to join the city employees for a retirement celebration and reception for Larned city manager Don Gaeddert from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at the city offices, 417 Broadway. Larned city manager Don Gaeddert and ncoming city manager Lane Massey have worked closely this week on budget preparation. Gaeddert announced his retirement this spring after serving as city manager for 18 years. Gaeddert and his wife, Marie will travel to China for a two-year period. They will teach English as a second language to the Chinese.

LARNED - A memorial service for former Larned resident Laura Harrell Arbuckle will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday by the duck pond at Schnack Park in Larned. Mrs. Arbuckle died April 23 at Aurora, Colo.

LARNED - Eleanor H.J. Tammen, 92, passed away April 21, at the Cedars Care Home in McPherson. Born May 10, 1921, in Albert, she was the daughter of Fred H. and Mattie G. Folkerts Hemken. On Aug. 27, 1941, she married Leonard F. Tammen in Albert. He passed away on March 12, 2009. After living in Colorado Springs from 1957 to 1961, she moved to Larned and was a resident from 1961 to 2005. She then moved to McPherson. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed baking, reading, and loved gardening. She was especially known for her fried chicken, homemade bread ...
RUSH CENTER - Dean M. Misegadis, 88, died April 21, at his home. Born on March 11, 1926, in rural Rush Center, he was the son of Louis and Caroline (Wagner) Misegadis. He was a 1944 graduate of Dodge City High School in Dodge City and attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. On April 24, 1952, he married Betty Keener at Hope Lutheran Church in Rush Center. A resident of Rush Center since 1946, he was the owner of Dean's TV & Appliance in Rush Center and La Crosse. He also was a farmer.
CLAFLIN - Donald E. Cates, 67, died April 22 in rural Pawnee County. Born Oct. 8, 1946, in Cushing, Okla., he was the son of V.E. and Thelma J. (Gower) Cates. On May 29, 1965, he married Ginger Krug in Pratt. A resident of Claflin, he was owner and operator of the 94 Store in Claflin, was a pilot for Pratt Farmers Spraying Service and was a retired commercial airline pilot. He was a Barton County Commissioner.
Steve Elmore, early childhood music teacher from Wichita Collegiate School, will offer a presentation about his travels through Kansas. The presentation, "Kansas Like You've Never Seen It," conveys information about interesting or unusual Kansas sites. The sites are little known to most tourists.
Driver's education permits will be available through the online application portal beginning on May 5, 2014.
