Jack Callaway

GREAT BEND - Funeral service for Jack Callaway will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Little River United Methodist Church, with pastor Theresa Forshee officiating. Burial will follow at the Bean Cemetery in Little River. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, with family receiving friends from 6 until 8 p.m., at Nicholson Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington and from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church Thursday. Memorials are suggested to Methodist Youthville in Newton in care of the funeral home.

Elise R. Rankin 1917-2012

LARNED - Elsie R. Rankin, 94, died Jan. 24, 2012 at the Larned Health Care. Born July 29, 1917, in Johnstown, Penn., she was the daughter of Robert and Dorotha Cramer Cummins. She was an accounting bookkeeper. On July 20, 1935, she married Charles W. Rankin in Wheeling, W.V. He died on Nov. 11, 1997.

Betty L. Rajewski 1935-2012

GREAT BEND - Betty L. Rajewski, 76, died Jan. 21 at her home in Great Bend. Born Feb. 16, 1935 in Hays, she was the daughter of Joseph and Julia (Gottschalk) Kronewitter. On Feb. 4, 1956 she married Marvin H. Rajewski in Schoenchen. A Great Bend resident since 1959, coming from Hays, she was a clerk at Dollar Tree and had been a cashier in the Barton Community College Cafeteria. She was also owner of Arrow Supply.

Oberle chosen as Student of the Month

BUSHTON - Central Plains Middle School has chosen Kaylyn Oberle as the January Student of the Month. Kaylyn is the daughter of Ray and Sandi Oberle and is in the eighth grade. Kaylyn has four siblings: Emily, 23, Nicole, 21, Becca, 18, and Jacob, 11.

USD112 CPMS students reach Renaissance criteria

BUSHTON - On Jan. 6, all Central Plains Middle School students who met the established Renaissance criteria for the second quarter were rewarded with an afternoon of swimming at Barton County Community College. To be eligible for this reward, students had to achieve higher than a 3.2 grade point average and have no detentions, tardies, or office referrals throughout the second quarter.

USD 112 students participate in Honor Band

Central Plains High School student Tim Demel was selected as the 1st Chair Principal Oboe in the 1234A State Honor Band. Demel will travel to Wichita for the Kansas Music Educators Association state convention to be held at the Century II Convention Center Feb. 23-25 for rehearsals and performance.

Kansas Heritage Exhibit

The Coronado Quivira Museum/Rice County Historical Society is celebrating Kansas Day 2012 with the creation of a special exhibit with a local tie to the bright lights of Hollywood. From Jan. 25-March 10, the special exhibition area at the museum will feature the exhibit "From Rice County to Hollywood: Mary Astor and Shirley Knight".

King UMC serving ham and beans Friday

King United Methodist Church, located at 16th and Odell Street in Great Bend, will hold its annual Ham & Bean Benefit Supper from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday. The menu includes ham and beans, corn bread, relishes, cake and dessert. Admission is by freewill donation. Carry-out will be available.

Hoisington K of C romantic meal

HOISINGTON - Everyone is invited to a prime rib dinner with salad, baked potato, rolls, dessert, coffee and tea for $20 per person from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14, at the Hoisington Knights of Columbus Hall, 114 N. Main. This dinner is a benefit to raise funds to improve the air conditioning in the hall and to install a fire suppression system in the kitchen.
