The City of Great Bend announced Monday during the City Council meeting that after nearly a year of planning and preparation, a Community Coordinator has been hired. Christina Hayes, a Claflin native, will assume her position with the City of Great Bend in the coming weeks.
An unattended candle was the cause of a fire early Thursday in Great Bend, Fire Chief Mike Napolitano said.
HUTCHINSON - Virgie Margaret Goerl, 88, died Oct. 5, at Hospice House in Hutchinson. Born Oct. 9, 1922, in Chase, she was the daughter of John Godfried and Mary Elizabeth Hoover Dressel. Virgie was a 1940 graduate of Chase High School. She taught for two years at the Sunnyside Grade School after graduating from Chase High School. After teaching, she worked at both Dillons and Swift and Company in Lyons. On August 1, 1948, she married Vincent Kenneth Goerl in Lyons. He died Feb. 3, 2001.
MCKINNEY, TEXAS - Andrew D. Wutka, 39, died unexpectedly on Oct. 3, at the Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, Texas. He was born Sept. 16, 1972 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., the beloved son of Anthony D. and Nancy C. (Roth) Wutka. Andrew spent his childhood in Fishkill, N.Y., Burlington, Vt., and Coral Springs, Fla. In 1990, he graduated from Taravella High School in Coral Springs. He attended the University of North Florida. In November 1992, he joined the Navy. He was a nuclear mechanic and served on the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70). He and Tammy moved to McKinney, Texas in 1998 ...

HOISINGTON - Anna Rose Urban, 84, died Oct. 28, at Russell Regional Hospital. Born July 3, 1930, in Claflin, she was the daughter of Frank and Anna (Hoffman) Tinkel. On May 2, 1951, she married Julius J. Urban in Dubuque. He died on Oct. 27, 2003. A lifetime resident of Barton County, she was the janitorial manage at the Hoisington Veterinary Hospital for many years.

Coaching basketball at a community college means a lot of new faces nearly every year. Barton Community College men's coach Craig Fletchall knows this. He had been at it for 13 years – eight at Barton where he is the all-time leader in coaching wins.
Five set matches have not been kind to the Barton Community College volleyball team this season. Tuesday night in Colby the Cougars played a 5-set match for the ninth time this season. For the seventh time, Barton lost that fifth and deciding set.
Great Bend middle school wrestlers started their season with practice Tuesday. Thirty one athletes participated in the first practice in the new middle school wrestling room.
