Globe-Trotters: Study Abroad Scholarships take students around the world

From South America, Australia, Africa, Europe, Asia and lots of places in between, Kansas State University students are expanding their horizons by studying abroad during the spring 2012 semester with the help of university and donor sponsored scholarships.

USD 428 Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. on Monday at the District Education Center, 201 South Patton Road. Items on the agenda include approval of the 2010-2011 business audit, updated information on the district's Shady Grove property, approval of roofing bids for Park School and Great Bend Middle School, report on 7th grade competitive sports, 2012-2013 program of studies, and an update on plans for replacement of the GBMS floor coverings.

Pilot Club donation

Members of the Pilot Club of Great Bend recently became aware of the need for car booster seats for some young children. The club donated thirty of the seats to children at Head Start, Helping Hands Pre-School, the Applied Learning Center and Share and Care Pre-School. RSVP column

RSVP wants to thank all of Santa's helpers that made lap robes for residents of the Barton County assisted living and nursing facilities during the past year. RSVP delivered 84 lap robes to three nursing facilities and four assisted living facilities for residents in need during the holiday season. This is more than we have ever delivered and it is all because of generous gifts of time and talent by a group of dedicated volunteers. You know who you are. Thank you so much!

FHSU Student Recognition Programs for 2012 begin in Garden City, Dodge City on Jan. 15

This year's edition of Fort Hays State University's annual 13-city, two-month Student Recognition Program will begin in Garden City and Dodge City on Jan. 15, swing into Colorado and Nebraska, and end in Colby on March 5. The highlight at each event is the recognition of scholarship winners.

Some members of the legislative and executive branches of Kansas government have publicly expressed their admiration for many "things Texan." For example, they acclaim Governor Rick Perry's conservative leadership and praise Texas' lack of a state income tax. Their high regard for our southerly neighbor may explain why our legislature is considering whether Kansas should switch to Texas' system for selecting Supreme Court justices. Texas procures justices through statewide elections.
