“The Foreigner” opens Sept. 10 at Sterling College

Opening with an award-winning comedy, the Sterling College theatre season begins on Thursday, Sept. 10, with "The Foreigner," directed by Kacie Hastings. Seven Sterling students will take the stage at 8 p.m. in Culbertson Auditorium in Spencer Hall to perform the play written by Larry Shue.

​Jury still out on Jordan trial

The jury left Thursday without reaching a verdict in the trial of Steven Terry Jordan. When jurors return to the Barton County Courthouse Friday morning they plan to review testimony from the defendant and from his accuser, a 25-year-old woman who said he raped her on Feb. 6, 2013, in Great Bend.

Kenneth Ballard King 1925 - 2015

Kenneth Ballard King, 89, died Aug. 31, 2015, at AMG Specialty Hospital in Wichita. He was born Sept. 2, 1925, at Maryville, Mo., the son of Eugene James and Margaret Grace (Allen) King. He graduated from Conception High School, Conception, Mo., and attended the University of Kansas and Purdue University. He enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17, serving during World War II and was later recalled to serve during the Korean Conflict. Fern Boger 1924 - 2015

Fern Boger, 91, died Sept. 2, 2015, at Brookdale Senior Living in Tulsa, Okla. Born Aug. 4, 1924, in Hoisington, she was the daughter of John and Lydia (Eichman) Lust. On Jan. 2, 1946, she married Emanuel Boger in Hoisington. He died on July 7, 2014. A resident of Great Bend since 1947, coming from Hoisington, she was a homemaker.

Gene Mull 1937 - 2015

Gene Mull, 78, died Sept. 2, 2015, at his home in Great Bend. Born March 5, 1937, in Great Bend, he was the son of Elmer Eugene Sr. and Mildred Bertha (Werhahn) Mull. On April 5, 1958, he married Patsy Sue Smith at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Barton County, he was a buyer for J & J Distributing Company.

Jimmie Dale Maris 1943 - 2015

Jimmie Dale Maris, 72, passed away on Tuesday evening, Sept. 1, 2015, in Great Bend after a lengthy illness. Born May 31, 1943, at Hoxie, he was the son of Clarence and Bernice (Bricker) Maris. He grew up in Rexford and later moved to Atwood, where he co-owned and operated Maris Barber Shop with his twin brother for about ten years. In 1990, he moved to Great Bend. On Oct. 11, 1964, he was united in marriage to Vicki Elliott at Ulysses. They later divorced. He loved hunting and woodworking (particularly furniture-making), animals, and taking care of his family.
