HOISINGTON - Emerson J. Davis, 80, passed away Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, at the Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. He was born March 2, 1934, on the homestead in rural Galatia, Kan., the son of David and Lena (Hester) Davis. He attended school at Hoisington and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Newkirk on Oct. 8, 1953. He was a truck driver for Kansas Brick and Tile for many years, later working for Albion Township.
HOISINGTON - John Edward Stoss, 50, died Jan. 1, 2015, at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita. He was born Aug. 28, 1964, the son of Edward John and Darlene (Doonan) Stoss. He was a 1983 graduate of Hoisington High School. A lifetime Hoisington resident, John was a farmer and had previously ran the maintainer for South Homestead Township. He had also driven a bus for USD 431, Hoisington.
The Barton County Sheriff's Office has arrested a man suspected of holding a woman again her will overnight on Jan. 1-2 and raping her.
Four people were injured after a pickup slid off a county road early on New Year's Day, just east of Great Bend.
The Big 12 has seven of its' 10 team in bowl games. Does that tell us that the Big 12 is a powerful football conference? Not really. Barton County Sheriff's Office deputies are investigating the first major injury accident of the new year that occurred early on the morning of New Year's Day. The accident occurred Thursday at approximately 2:38 a.m. just east of Great Bend.

HOISINGTON – Corrine Catherine Finger, 75, died Dec. 31, 2014, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. She was born July 16, 1939, in Great Bend, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph Lawrence "Joe L." and Regina Marie (Debes) Kaiser. She married Lawrence J. "Larry" Finger, April 27, 1963, in Odin. He died Dec. 1, 2005.
Lillian F. Whitsel Barger Claphan, 84, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. She was born Oct. 14, 1930, at Great Bend, the daughter of George and Frances (Koelsch) Whitsel, Sr.
Virginia K. Hogsett, 79, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014, at her home in Great Bend. She was born May 5, 1935, at Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Elon Chester "Chief" and Mabel Edith (Wilson) Hogsett.

LARNED - Troy Dean Davis, 43, passed away Jan. 16, 2015, at his home in Larned. He was born Jan. 3, 1972, in Great Bend, the son of Jerrold Dale and Sheryl Lynn Suchy Davis. A lifetime area resident, he was a service technician at Harper Camper Land in Great Bend.
It has been a hectic nine days for the Barton Community College men's basketball team. Nine days that including five games, three suspensions, two ranked opponents and one rival. Oh, yeah, and four wins.
It has been a rugged five days for the Barton Community College women's basketball team. About as tough a 5-day stretch as any team in the nation will see this season. It came to a conclusion Wednesday night with a loss Hutchinson, 73-45 at the Barton Gym.
After the tragic shooting at a provocative magazine in Paris last week, I pointed out that given the foreign policy positions of France we must consider blowback as a factor. Those who do not understand blowback made the ridiculous claim that I was excusing the attack or even blaming the victims. Not at all, as I abhor the initiation of force. The police blaming victims when they search for the motive of a criminal.
As the controversy builds over anything and everything relating to Barack Obama, many Republicans have come to believe that their party will prosper as a result.
