Emerson J. Davis 1934 - 2015

HOISINGTON - Emerson J. Davis, 80, passed away Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, at the Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. He was born March 2, 1934, on the homestead in rural Galatia, Kan., the son of David and Lena (Hester) Davis. He attended school at Hoisington and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Newkirk on Oct. 8, 1953. He was a truck driver for Kansas Brick and Tile for many years, later working for Albion Township.

​John Edward Stoss 1964 - 2015

HOISINGTON - John Edward Stoss, 50, died Jan. 1, 2015, at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita. He was born Aug. 28, 1964, the son of Edward John and Darlene (Doonan) Stoss. He was a 1983 graduate of Hoisington High School. A lifetime Hoisington resident, John was a farmer and had previously ran the maintainer for South Homestead Township. He had also driven a bus for USD 431, Hoisington.

Let’s Go Bowling

The Big 12 has seven of its' 10 team in bowl games. Does that tell us that the Big 12 is a powerful football conference? Not really. Mostly it tells us that there are too many bowls, though I would put the Big 12's football prowess right up there with any of the other conferences including the much-ballyhooed Southeastern Conference.

Barton County Sheriff's Office deputies are investigating the first major injury accident of the new year that occurred early on the morning of New Year's Day. The accident occurred Thursday at approximately 2:38 a.m. just east of Great Bend.

City Council meets Monday night

The Great Bend City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the City Office, 1209 Williams. The agenda includes a report from Great Bend Chamber of Commerce President Jan Peters, a letter of support for a SeaPort Airlines ticketing and baggage agreement and an a consultant agreement for FAA airport grants regarding a building a fire truck at Great Bend Municipal Airport.

Commission to hold Monday morning meeting

She was born July 16, 1939, in Great Bend, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph Lawrence "Joe L." and Regina Marie (Debes) Kaiser. She married Lawrence J. "Larry" Finger, April 27, 1963, in Odin. He died Dec. 1, 2005.

Lessons from Paris

After the tragic shooting at a provocative magazine in Paris last week, I pointed out that given the foreign policy positions of France we must consider blowback as a factor. Those who do not understand blowback made the ridiculous claim that I was excusing the attack or even blaming the victims. Not at all, as I abhor the initiation of force.
