Helen J. Suchy 1924 - 2013

Helen J. Suchy, 89, died Aug. 24 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born June 9, 1924 in Pawnee County, she was the daughter of Emil and Amiela (Vozoboj) Vsetecka. On Dec. 29, 1943 she married Alvie J. Suchy in Olmitz. He died on Nov. 14, 1986. She was a resident of Great Bend since 1943, coming from Timken. She enjoyed all aspects of homemaking, including sewing, crocheting, baking, and gardening. She also enjoyed her pet dogs and rock hunting and collecting.

Virginia M. Cropp 1946 - 2013

HOISINGTON - Virginia M. Cropp, 67, died Aug. 24 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. Born April. 16, 1946 in Alva, Okla., she was the daughter of William and Ora (Williams) Baker. On July 23, 1967 she married Gary Cropp in Pratt. He survives. She was a resident of Hoisington since 1967, coming from Alva, Okla.

Gloria Grace VanSkike 2013

OMAHA, Neb. - Gloria Grace VanSkike, infant daughter of Joshua and Lisa (Jones) VanSkike of Minden, Neb. entered this world on Aug. 17th, 2013 at 12:40 a.m. She passed away peacefully after 13 hours of life at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb. Gloria was dedicated to God in a small service before her passing.

​GB firefighters out to collect for muscular dystrophy

This Friday, Great Bend firefighters will collect donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association with their annual "boot block." Firefighters will be at Walmart and both Dillon stores from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4-7 p.m. Mark Orth at the Fire Department asks the public to help firefighters fill their boots for MDA.

Asphalt overlay on K-4 set to begin

Starting around Thursday, Aug. 29, the Kansas Department of Transportation will begin an asphalt paving project on K-4 in Barton County. This asphalt surface recycle and overlay project will start at the Rush/Barton County line and continue east 10 miles to the west junction of K-4 and U.S. 281 highways.

FFA Convention

Great Bend High School FFA Officers attended the 84th Kansas State FFA Convention this summer. Alaycia Ryan and Logan Evers were the GBHS FFA Chapter Delegates for the Convention. Logan Evers received the Bronze Award on his chapter scrap book. Three officers were selected to be part of the State FFA Choir - Mackenzie Thornburg, Erin Bowers, and Melanie Maneth. Mackenzie Thornburg was also selected to sing the National Anthem at the start of one of the sessions.
