​Golden Belt families join Operation Christmas Child

Faith Community Church will host a celebration Saturday, Sept. 28, to kick off the expected 15,000 shoebox gifts that southwest Kansas residents will collect this year for needy children overseas. The event for Operation Christmas Child starts at 9:30 a.m. at the church, located at 293 West Barton County Road, Great Bend.

St. Mark Lutheran, 2101 Jackson, Great Bend, and St. Paul Lutheran, Galatia, will begin their fall/winter service schedule next month. Beginning Sunday, Oct. 6, worship service at St. Mark will begin at 9 a.m. with children's church during the service and coffee hour following at 10 a.m.

Janice Waknitz 1942 - 2013

Janice Waknitz died Sept. 26 at Holmes Regional Medical Center, Melbourne, Fla. She was born April 23, 1942, at Green Forest, Ark., the daughter of John Grady and Louella (Wells) Howerton. She married Charles Waknitz Dec. 27, 1966, at Wichita. A retired 30-year school teacher, she had been a Great Bend resident since 1976, coming from Kinsley.
