The Barton County Sheriff's Office has released more information about the death of an Olmitz man who was hit by a semi-trailer as he walked along U.S. 56 on Wednesday.

University of Kansas basketball players will be here April 17 for the Kansas Barnstorming Tour, coming to the Barton Community College Gym in the Kirkman Center.
The Barton County Historical Museum and Village will conduct an orientation meeting at 1 p.m. Thursday at the village, located south of the river bridge on U.S. 281. The meeting is for anyone in Barton County who seeks information about volunteer service at the museum, said Karen Naylor, volunteer coordinator.
Habitat for Humanity of Barton County will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on its latest project, at 19th and Hubbard, at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. This is being done in conjunction with Habitat's Chamber Coffee, and the public is invited, said Rachel Mawhirter, co-chairman of the nonprofit organization's board of directors.

Paul R. Chisholm, 85, of Great Bend, died April 1 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Services are pending with Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend.
Harmon E. "Shorty" Allinger, 77, died April 1 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born March 21, 1934, at Great Bend, the son of Harmon C. and Goldie (Miles) Allinger. He married Velma Leiker on Jan. 14, 1958, at Hays. A lifetime Great Bend resident, he owned and operated H&H Auto Electric.
MISSION, Texas - Leona M. Wess Blankenship, 92, died April 1 at the Mission Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Mission, Texas. Born April 27, 1918, in Great Bend, was the daughter of Theodore P. and Sarah Ellen Gilbert Wess. Leona Wess and Donald Carroll Blankenship were married on Oct. 11, 1935, in Great Bend. She was a homemaker on the farm until the girls started high school. She worked for Honaker Drilling Inc. and moved first to Oleander Acres and then to Enchanted Valley Ranch in Mission, Texas.
Billie Lou Burgardt, 61, died April 1 at Trinity Hospital in Rock Island, Ill. Services are pending with Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend.
LARNED – John Mariche Perez, 67, died March 31 at his home in Larned. Born March 2, 1944, at Dodge City, he was the son of Clemente Rincon and Lucille Mariche Perez. A lifetime resident of the Edwards and Pawnee County area, he was a Licensed Mental Health Technician at the Larned State Hospital. On Aug. 16, 1969, he married Mary Lynn Stejskal at Miami, Okla. She survives.
Barton Community College has announced recipients of Honor Scholarships for the 2010-11 academic year. To earn an Honor Scholarship at Barton, the student must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 to 3.49. These awards are administered by Barton's Financial Aid Office. The Hoisington High School forensics team placed fourth out of nine schools at Central Plains High School in Claflin recently. Sterling finished first; Hodgeman County (Jetmore) placed second, and Sylvan-Lucas placed third.
ELLINWOOD -The Ellinwood High School Forensics Team qualified four new events for the state championships tournament with their stellar performances at competitions held at Central Plains and Lyons High School last week.

Nearly 300 of Kansas best educators gathered in Topeka in February for the 2014 KEEN (Kansas Exemplary Educators Network) Conference. This by-invitation only conference was hosted by the Kansas State Department of Education. It is for active KEEN members, their principals and superintendents, and recognized educators. They met to discuss current education issues and classroom practices. The two days were spent celebrating the achievements of Kansas public schools and collaborating on ways to better serve Kansas students.
