I am proud to announce that Carol Danielson is the new Administrative Assistant and Volunteer Coordinator for the RSVP program. Carol was born in Ellis County and grew up in Antonino near Hays. She married a Navy man from Hays and travelled all over before settling in San Diego. After his death in 1984, she stayed on in San Diego with her son and eventually married John Murphy. KWEC changes hours, days of operation

Beginning April 1, the days and hours of operation at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center will change. Previously, the KWEC has been closed on Mondays. Now, from April 1 through Oct. 31, the KWEC will be open on Mondays. Also, the opening time of the KWEC will be moved back one hour. GBHS Track's Cliff Burt to retire following state meet

You can measure success for a high school and youth sports coach in a lot of different ways; number of state champions, number of athletes continuing their career in college with a scholarship and, most of all, having a positive impact on an adolescent's development. Cliff Burt exemplifies all of those categories and then some. A track coach in Great Bend for the past 35 years, 20 at the high school level, coach Burt has left his mark on the shot and discuss rings that will never be matched.

​John L. “Jack” Godin 1939 - 2015

PAWNEE ROCK - John L. "Jack" Godin, 76, died May 25, 2015, at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita. Born March 24, 1939, in Tupper Lake, N.Y., he was the son of Frank and Marion (Prespare) Godin. On Oct. 31, 1981, he married Mildred Gable in Great Bend. A resident of Pawnee Rock for six years, coming from Great Bend, he was a heavy equipment operator in the oilfield and later worked for maintenance at Great Bend Housing Authority.

Erwin “Erv” Leiker 1934 - 2015

Erwin "Erv" Leiker, 81, Great Bend, died May 24, 2015, at his home. He was born Feb. 6, 1934, in Hays the son of Leo and Angela (Klaus) Leiker. On Nov. 8, 1958, he married Janet Grace Burgardt in Pfeifer. She died May 6, 2000. He was a retired oilfield worker and was a Hays High School graduate.

​Ruth Marie Cannon 1936 - 2015

Ruth Marie Cannon, 79, died May 23, 2015, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. She was born May 16, 1936, at Dodge City, the daughter of Hillary and Ruth Borne. She married Manford G. "Bud" Cannon Oct. 29, 1949, at Boone, Arkansas. He died Dec. 7, 1982. A long-time Great Bend resident, she was an accounts payable clerk for Great Bend Manufacturing.
