Weaver has touched many lives

Friday, Feb. 3, was a special day for a special lady. Long-time Barton County Extension home economist Mae Weaver celebrated her 90th birthday. Thousands of county residents have been touched by this lady at some point in their lives. As an advisor to the Homemaker Units, Mae brought a wide variety of educational programs to help families improve their quality of life. Mae especially liked researching topics related to history or cultural arts and then putting a slide set together to share with audiences across the county. The advantages of perfect competition

What is often frustrating to all students, not just those in agriculture, is many disciplines start out and describe "pure" systems or concepts. After students have mastered these ideas, they are then told that the "real" world isn't actually like what was just learned. In reality, the world is a complicated, messy place. However, these "ideal" concepts are still useful, provided you understand how reality alters the "ideal."

​Kiwanis Easter Egg Hunt scheduled for Saturday

The annual Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by the Great Bend Noon Kiwanis will be held at 9:30 a.m. sharp on Saturday, April 4, at the Kiwanis Walking Track on the north side of Veterans Memorial Park. The event is open to all area children pre-school through 6th grade. There will be Easter eggs and prizes given for special eggs.

Spring Expo scenes

These photos were taken Saturday at the 21st annual Central Kansas Spring Expo. With 194 exhibitors, there is something for everyone. The expo continues Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Expo Complex west of Great Bend. Admission is free until noon. In the afternoon it is $1 for adults; children will be admitted for free. Many vendors have featured products.

​Delia “Dee” Farminer 1942 - 2015

Delia "Dee" Farminer, 73, died March 26, 2015, at her home in North Newton. Born March 13, 1942, in Southampton, England, she was the daughter of Thomas and Gwendoline (Hooker) Eldridge. On Aug. 19, 1961, she married Eric Farminer in Southampton, England. He died on March 25, 1996. A resident of Great Bend since 1965, coming from Southampton, England, she recently lived in North Newton to be close to family. She was a caregiver for Elder Care.

Sister Connie Haug (Sister Omer), 80, died March 26, 2015, in the Dominican Sisters' convent infirmary in Great Bend. Born Sept. 28, 1934, in Seneca, as Constance Lucille Haug, Sister Connie was the daughter of Omer and Lucille Noll Haug. She entered the Dominican Sisters' Community in Great Bend on Aug. 28, 1952, and pronounced her first vows on June 13, 1955. She celebrated 50 years of religious profession in 2005.

​James Lane Williams 1923 - 2015

BOULDER, Colo. - James Lane Williams, 91, of Boulder, Colo., died of natural causes on March 26, 2015, surrounded by his family. The son of Marie Steckel and J.O. Williams, he was born Nov. 27, 1923, in Ellinwood. His family lived in several towns in Oklahoma and Kansas before settling in Great Bend in 1937. He served in the United States Army during World War II and married Helen Thompson on March 25, 1944, while stationed in El Paso, Texas. He and Helen were married for 60 great years.

Common Core Tests are Failures

A 6th grader in East Texas recently challenged state lawmakers to do what she and every other public-school kid have to do during testing season: "Sit in a room for up to four hours, without talking, writing, drawing, reading, or using your cell phone." Because millions of children are taking Common Core standardized tests this time of year, I did her one better. I took a 4th-grade English Language Arts practice test. The good news is I passed.
