Smoke from a large grass fire burning north of Interstate 70 on Monday caused a chain reaction accident involving five vehicles, Kansas Highway Patrol reports.
Kansas historian Leo Oliva will present the program, "What Did They Eat on the Santa Fe Trail?" when the Barton County Historical Society hosts a joint meeting with the Quivira Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association next week. The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 28, in the Ray Schulz Research Library at the Barton County Historical Society Museum, located just south of the Arkansas River Bridge on U.S. 281 (Main Street) in Great Bend.

Plans for holding Earth Day 2014 switched to high gear following Mayor Mike Allison's proclamation encouraging residents from Great Bend and nearby communities to celebrate Earth Day 2014 on Sunday at Great Bend's Brit Spaugh Zoo. This event is from noon to 4 p.m. and free to all. Food will be sold during the afternoon.
