NAMI to hold family event

The local chapter of the National Alliance for Mental Illness will hold a bake sale and family-fun day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at the north end of Brit Spaugh Park in Great Bend. The event will also include a barbecue meal for $5, dunk tank, snow cones and other activities.

Bender/Brack family reunion

All nine children of Elsena Bender and the late Hubert Bender met in Great Bend, Aug. 1, for a Bender/Brack family reunion. In 1965, a plane crash took the lives of Marvin and Thelma Brack so the Benders took in their five nieces and nephews and raised them along with their own four daughters. The family was celebrating the last 50 years that they have been together as one family. The nine children, along with spouses, children and grandchildren brought together almost 50 people for the weekend.

Christiansen family reunion

The annual Christiansen Family reunion was held on Aug. 8, at the Larned Community Center. The attendees were descendants of August and Pruella Christiansen, the family farm was southeast of Great Bend, in Barton County.

Koch to perform in Tokyo

Dr. Nathan Koch, Associate Professor of Bassoon at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, will be attending the International Double Reed Society conference in Tokyo, Japan. The conference is held each year at different locations around the world to promote the double reed woodwinds, primarily oboes and bassoons.
