Brungardt attains Eagle Scout

Great Bend High School senior, Nathan Brungardt, has attained Eagle Scout, the highest Boy Scout advancement. He joined Cub Scout Pack #157 in 2001 and in 2007 crossed over to Boy Scout Troop #157, led by Steve Divis. His Eagle Scout project consisted of converting an old mule barn at the Great Bend Zoo into an enclosed housing for the owls. All materials for his project were recycled or donated.

Great Bend City Slickers

Great Bend City Slicers 4-H Club met on Feb. 17 at the Pizza Hut. There were eight members, eight parents are four guests present. Members were reminded of 4-H Days on March 2. The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on March 14 at the old 4-H building.

Dolores (Nadine) Foltz 1928 - 2015

HUGOTON - Dolores Nadine (George) Foltz, 86, died on June 19, 2015, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton. Born Dec. 13, 1928, in Anthony, she was the daughter of Audra and Bernice (Feely) George. On June 22, 1947, she married Jack H. Foltz in Anthony at the First Congressional Church. She was a resident of Great Bend for 65 years. She loved her children and grandchildren, cooking, and gardening. She loved helping family and friends, she enjoyed gardening.

Chiefs fall in semifinals to Buhler

McPHERSON- The Great Bend Chiefs dropped their semifinal game to Buhler in a 7-0 shutout Sunday at the Hooper Showcase. The Chiefs posted a 3-0 record earlier in the tournament with wins over the Kansas Cannons on Friday and El Dorado and Ark City Saturday. At 12-11 on the season Great Bend will host Dodge City Tuesday in doubleheader action beginning at 6 p.m. at GBSC.

County announces holiday closings for Friday

Barton County business offices, the Health Department and the Records Division of the Sheriff's Office will be closed for the Independence Day Holiday on Friday. The Landfill will be open from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. Friday, and will be closed the remainder of the holiday weekend. Emergency services will be in normal operation on that day.

Blazers head to Nationals following MAYB tour win

The Barton Blazers took first place in the Great Bend MAYB tournament this past weekend. The Blazers defeated the CK Select in the championship game 49-38. The Blazers will play at Nationals the weekend of July 30th in Wichita. Players include Brock Skelton, Chance Sanger, Nick Wondra, J.J. Heredia, Evan Campbell, Dalton Miller, Connor Griffith, Sam Ryan, and Ray Kuhlman.

Great Bend July 4 fireworks show planned

The Great Bend Fourth of July community fireworks display Saturday, July 4, at the Great Bend Expo Complex west of town. Gates will open at 7:30 p.m. The show, which is choreographed to music, will begin as soon as it is dark enough (between 9:45 and 10 p.m.).

Harvest is here. Combines, trucks, chaff and grain. Kansas big heart is beating in the hot sun and wind. The heritage of history to support our families and validate the wisdom of our forefathers who risked everything to come here is palpable and visible in the faces of our farmers. It is religious to watch this process draw families, neighbors, custom-cutting visitors and friends together to process the harvest.
