Russell Churches Care raises money for local food bank

RUSSELL - The Russell Association of Churches has a new moniker, Russell Churches Care. Ministerial Alliance president, the Rev. Roger Dennis, of St. John Lutheran Church revealed the new theme in coordination with the initial event to be held Sunday, Oct. 28, at Russell High School's Shaffer Field.

Association of Churches to serve soup for Barton County Emergency Aid

Barton County Association of Churches is planning its annual soup supper, which will take place from 4:30-7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, at the Prince of Peace Parish Center in Great Bend. A freewill donation will be taken, and all can enjoy soup and pie or cake, organizers said. Dine-in and carryout will be available.

Chiefs rebound with sweep at Hooper Showcase

McPHERSON- Following a doubleheader loss earlier in the week the Great Bend Chiefs regrouped Friday and came away with an 8-5 victory over the Kansas Cannons at this weekend's Hooper Showcase. Logan Perry saddled the win for Great Bend while Miguel Sanchez collected the save. In Saturday competition, the Chiefs downed El Dorado 4-2 behind Anson Hall's complete game victory. Great Bend then beat Ark City in a 12-2 decision to go 3-0 in pool play. The Chiefs sit at 12-10 on the season and will face either Buehler or Junction City in the semifinals of the Hooper ...

Brenda Ann Barger, 58, died June 25, 2015, at her home in Great Bend. She was born Sept. 17, 1956, at Salina, to Bob Bruce and Beverly Ann (Holdren) Burgard. She married Steve Barger Nov. 21, 1992, at Great Bend. A Great Bend resident since 1979, coming from Salina, she was a homemaker and foster mother.

David Wayne Bowman 1959 - 2015

LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. - David Wayne Bowman, 55, died June 24, 2015, at Centerpoint Medical Center, Independence, Missouri. He was born Oct. 13, 1959, at Larned, to Howard and Carole (Unruh) Bowman. He was a 1977 graduate of Macksville High School and graduated from Barton County Community College, Emporia State University and the University of Kansas. A longtime Kansas City area resident, he was a custodian for the Lee's Summit School District.

Panthers 11U win league title
