​Quivira Refuge to host ‘Peeps and Pastries’

STAFFORD COUNTY - Staff from Quivira National Wildlife Refuge will present its annual Peeps and Pastries program from 8-10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, April 28. This is a guided tour led by Refuge staff through Quivira's wetlands in a search for some of the many shorebirds that migrate through the area each spring. After the tour, refreshments are provided.

​Park Booster Club to host Bingo Night

The Park Booster Club will host Bingo Night on Friday, April 20, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Park Elementary School gym. Participants can purchase pizza, drink, cookie and two cards for $5. Additional cards, food and drinks may be purchased separately. There will be a grand prize $150 blackout sponsored by AIL and a $100 blackout sponsored by A One Automotive/Kern Floor Covering.

Outdoor fireplace starts small fire under deck

At 9:22 p.m. Thursday, Great Bend firefighters were dispatched to a possible structure at 1401 18th St. Upon arrival they found light smoke in the residence. Chief Mike Napolitano said the owner had been using an outdoor fireplace that was under an awning against the house and a small fire had started under the wood deck it was sitting on.

Panther Bowling teams headed to state

On Friday both Panther bowling teams punched their ticket for a return trip to the 5A-1A State Bowling Tournament. The Lady Panthers started off the day by finishing as the regional runner up in the 12 team tournament which was held at the Walnut Bowl. The Lady Panthers were narrowly defeated by Salina South by seven pins. Sophomore McKenzy Black led the Panthers with a team series high of 518. Hoisington High School finishes 2nd at State Wrestling Tournament

The Hoisington High School Wrestling team ended their season this past weekend at the K.S.H.A.A. Class 1-3A State Wrestling tournament held in Hays. The team brought 10 kids to the meet with the expectation of bringing home hardware. Not too long ago when the senior class was freshmen they were able to bring home a second place trophy, but this time the expectations were one step higher. Betty R. Standlee 1926 - 2015

ELLINWOOD - Betty R. Standlee, 88, died Feb. 28, at Leisure Homestead in St. John. Born Nov. 21, 1926, in Russell, she was the daughter of Carl W. and Beatrice S. (White) Kastrup. On Nov. 28, 1942, she married R. D. Standlee in Russell, He died on Dec. 31, 2007. A resident of Ellinwood since 1971, coming from Bristow, Okla., she was a homemaker.
