Bagworms

Over the past few weeks, I have been receiving many calls about bagworms in area trees. This is the time of year that they are the most visible since the identifying bag that they will overwinter in is large enough to see from a distance. Also, their feeding habits may have defoliated a few branches making them even easier to see. Although bagworms are much easier to control in late May or the end of June when they are smaller, as long as the insect is still feeding on the foliage, they can be controlled. Don’t Wait!!!

The fall migration is here. There are more shore birds right now than I have ever seen this time of year. It is usually a bit later when they migrate in numbers by my recollection. Karl and Charlie and KWEC will have the exact dates of arrivals if you want to check. Whooping Cranes will be later in the fall (I think their goal is to shut down duck hunting at Quivira NWR as completely as possible. Ha!) and I think we will get some great pictures of those birds. I will try to get more pictures on Facebook this ...

Become a Life Long Learner

School bells will be ringing in a few days and that means pre-schoolers through college aged kids will be adapting to their new schedules. What about the rest of you; those of you reading this column who may not be formally enrolled in a school but who consider yourself a life-long learner? I love adult learners. That is probably what has kept me excited and energized to continue in my Extension career. No matter what your age there are opportunities everywhere to learn something new and apply it in your daily life.

Worlds of Fun, August 1973

Long before Hollywood screenwriters ever crafted the personality of Clark Griswold there was another father with a penchant for long family vacations with attendant misadventures. His name was Larry Keenan. And so when Worlds of Fun opened for business in May, 1973, it was just four months later when dad piled mother Ramona, and me and my siblings Kathy, Tim, Marty, and Beth in the Chrysler station-wagon and hit the gas pedal to see what Disney World- East had to offer.
