For a while there, didn't seem like it'd ever happen, but somehow we mercifully staggered across the annum finish line, finally placing 2012 irrevocably in the rear-view mirror. Make no mistake, the political climate is still volatile. Rash. Mad. Loud. Pulsating forehead vein above arcing spray of spittle loud. And the double-crossing chicanery hasn't mellowed a bit of a spot of an iota from the fever pitch of last year's quadrennial heights.
This week's Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be hosted by Wheatland Electric, 2300 Broadway, at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. Ambassador in charge will be AJ Chrest with greeters Jan Westfall and Julie Smith. Coffee, doughnuts and door prizes will be available.
The Great Bend High School Varsity Debate Team traveled to Hutchinson for the 2 Speaker Varsity State Championship Tournament on Jan. 11-12. To qualify for state the teams must have competed in four varsity tournaments and have a 50% win/loss record. Two teams qualified which consisted of the team of Michael Gieck and Kameko Schultz, as well as the team of Marissa Hoisington and Chase Pumford. They competed against 23 schools and 70 teams. Gloria Hernandez's name is becoming synonymous with vegetarian cooking in Great Bend. After teaching classes at the Parent Resource Center and also the Great Bend Recreation Center she now is offering a one-day vegan vegetarian cooking class from 1-6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, at the Great Bend Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1 mile west of 10th and Patton in Great Bend.
The Central Kansas Community Choir, which is sponsored by Barton Community College will begin rehearsals next week for its 2015 concert, "God and Country."
Not often does the Golden Belt Community Concert Association feature a steel drum and marimba percussionist in concert. In fact, this month's performer is the first. Paul McDermand, Caribbean/pop performer on steel drum and marimba, will present the association's first concert of 2015 at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at the Great Bend Municipal Auditorium, Lakin and Stone.
