No Test-maker Left Behind: Money Short-Changes Education Reform

For the first time since George W. Bush signed No Child Left Behind, the House has passed a major rewrite of federal education law. On Friday, the House approved the Student Success Act along party lines-Republicans for, Democrats against-but the bill has little chance of getting past a Democratic Senate and a White House veto threat. Democrats in Washington don't trust the states to hold themselves accountable, and a recent audit of how Texas has mishandled a half billion-dollar contract with testing giant NCS Pearson shows why.

Kim Marie Pelster 1956 - 2013

Kim Marie Pelster, 57, died July 20 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita. Born Jan. 1, 1956 in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Robert L. Sr. and Lodema (Garrett) Pelster. A lifetime resident of Great Bend and Hoisington, she was a foster mother and a driver for St. Francis Academy.

Diana Grace Trimmer 1961 - 2013

Diana Grace Trimmer, 52, passed away July 22, at Great Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness. She was born Feb. 7, 1961 at St Rose Hospital in Great Bend, the daughter of Hazel Grace Johnson and Joseph Delaine Levingston. The oldest of four siblings, Diana grew up in Pawnee Rock and attended Pawnee Rock High School. She married John Dixon Trimmer June 10, 1976. They adopted 12 children and lived in the rural Great Bend area. As a wife, mother, sister, and advocate, Diana dedicated her life to helping children in need, family, and friends.

Dorothy Anita (Ahrens) Foster 1925 - 2013

NATOMA - Dorothy Anita (Ahrens) Foster, died July 20, at Redbud Village in Plainville. Born Dec. 5, 1925, on the family farm in rural Osborne County, she was the daughter of Paul Conrad and Amanda Julie (Eickhoff) Ahrens. She attended Belleville Country School. On Feb. 13, 1946, she married Charles Dean Foster, in Russell. She was a homemaker and stay-at-home mom. She later worked at various jobs in local businesses, grocery store cashier, waitress, bank and mortuary custodian.
