GBHS students earn gold KAY award

Nine members of the Great Bend High School Kays and 13 Kayettes attended the Area 6 KAY Regional Conference on Nov. 7 at Arkansas City Middle School. The clubs returned with the highest state award possible. The Kays and Kayettes each received the Gold Award, recognizing their student leadership and service to their school, community, nation and world for the 2012-2013 school year.

Kiwanis wins Friends of Scouting award

The Great Bend Kiwanis Club has been chosen for the 2013 Friends of Scouting award, presented by the Boy Scout Quivira Council Board of Directors. Bill McKown, representing the board, presented a plaque to Kiwanis Club President Becky Dudrey at the Nov. 13 Kiwanis meeting.

Service providers unite to effectively represent people with developmental disabilities

Five community service providers representing nearly 800 people with developmental disabilities from across the state met recently in Great Bend and discussed the upcoming Legislative session. The Alliance for Kansans with Developmental Disabilities includes: Creative Community Living (Winfield, Ark City and El Dorado); Disability Supports of the Great Plains (Hutchinson and McPherson); Easter Seals Capper Foundation (Topeka); Quest Services (Hiawatha); and Rosewood Services, serving the central Kansas area.

Sandra and I were in Lawrence for the state championship of the 5th grade football league this past week-end. The Hoisington team represented themselves and our community very well. I got some really good photographs. It is a special time for these budding athletes who still appreciate a mom's hug and their family support. The coaches donate a huge amount of time and effort for these kids. It is an expensive endeavor to travel as much as is required, and I give a "shout up" to those families that haul, feed and sleep these guys.

Kans for Kids has successful fundraiser

HOISINGTON - Ghouls, ghosts, and goblins with generous hearts were among those attending the 3rd Annual Kans for Kids Auction and Dinner held Nov. 2 at the Hoisington Knights of Columbus. Barton County children living with cancer and children who will attend Camp Hope in 2014 will be the beneficiaries of funds raised at the Ghoulish Gala.
