Honor Flights still on mission

Maybe a local group can't officially use the name "Honor Flights," anymore, but the former Central Prairie Honor Flights, coordinated by the Great Bend Central Prairie Resource Conservation and Development office, is proceeding full speed ahead. The governing board of Honor Flights Network, based in Springfield, Ohio, voted to decertify Central Prairie Honor Flights in April. The local group has earned state and national recognition for honoring World War II veterans. Sterling physician applies for 113th District position

STERLING - A physician who works part-time at the Great Bend Regional Medical Center has announced his candidacy for the 113th District seat in the Kansas House of Representatives formerly held by the late Bob Bethell of Alden. Lorene Bethell will finish his term in the Kansas Legislature, but does not plan to seek a full term.

St. John top-seed at Mid-Winter Classic

Defending Mid-Winter Classic champion St. John (9-0) drew the top seed, but innovative scheduling gives the unbeaten Tigers three games next week. St. John will open against the Pratt-Macksville loser at 4:45 p.m. But the Tigers will still play in Friday's second semifinal game at 8:15 p.m. against the Pratt-Macksville winner, which is scheduled Tuesday. The other bracket matches Ness City against Nickerson and Larned versus winless Wichita West (0-8) in Thursday's games.
