Great Bend erased a 7-point deficit with a 21-6 scoring burst for a 62-51 Western Athletic Conference victory over Hays High Friday. The Panthers converted 21 of 30 free throws to outscore the Indians by 14 points.
The Great Bend girls basketball team (12-8), runner-up in the Western Athletic Conference, will travel to Maize South (13-7) at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Class 5A Goddard Eisenhower basketball substate. The winner will play the Goddard Eisenhower (6-14) vs. Goddard (16-4) winner Saturday night.
PARK CITY – Great Bend's No. 1 ranked Cody Liles (132), No. 4 ranked Keaton Sander (138) and No. 5 ranked Christian Rivas (160) earned top five finishes in the Class 5A state wrestling tournament. The Panthers scored 50 points to rank 13th in the team scores.
HAYS - Hoisington High's Christopher Ball (152) won three matches Friday to qualify for the Class 3A state wrestling finals for the second year in a row. No. 1 ranked Ball (40-0) will meet Rossville's No. 2 ranked Isaiah Luellen (39-6) in Saturday's championship match. Ball placed second in last year's 152-pound finals.
PARK CITY – No. 1 ranked Cody Liles (132) of Great Bend joined teammates Keaton Sander (138) and Christian Rivas (160) in losing in the Class 5A state wrestling semifinals. Each Great Bend wrestler had won two matches to reach Friday's semifinals. All three Panthers can finish as high as third place.
The No. 1 ranked Central Plains boys (20-0) and No. 1 ranked Central Plains girls (20-0) are top-seeded in the St. John Class 2A basketball substate next week. The Oiler boys meet Medicine Lodge (10-10) Tuesday at Claflin. The Oiler girls play Ellinwood (3-16) at Claflin Monday.
Great Bend's Cody Liles (40-3, 132) is top-ranked in the Class 5A state wrestling rankings. Keaton Sander (32-3, 138) is ranked fourth. Three-time state qualifier Liles placed sixth last year. Sander is a returning state qualifier. Christian Rivas (27-7, 160) is ranked fifth.
