No. 1 singles Alex Smith led the Great Bend Panthers with a third-place finish at Saturday's Great Bend home tennis tournament. Smith finished with an 8-4 victory over Liberal's Erick Rodriguez for third place.

Panther golfer places ninth

GARDEN CITY - Great Bend ninth-grader Cole Streck birdied two holes to place ninth (85) at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course Saturday. Players battled north winds blowing 20 to 35 mph. Streck rallied from a front nine 47 with a solid back nine 38.

State qualifier leads Larned tennis

LARNED - Larned's Dalton Penka returns with state singles and doubles experience for the Indian tennis team. Penka and teammate Kobe Kraisinger finished 0-2 at the 4A state doubles tournament last year. Penka placed third in the Central Kansas League last year. Penka qualified for state singles and went 0-2 in 2016.

Placing in the USAWKS 2018 Folkstyle Wrestling championships are front row-Kaden Spragis (90), 14-under, sixth; Cal Schartz (55), 8-under, second; 6-under, elementary, seventh; Wyatt Weber (100), 14-under, sixth; back row-Drew Liles (120), high school, fourth; Breanna Ridgeway (143), 14-under, first, USAWKS Girls State championship; George Weber (138), high school, first. Not pictured-Chayse Gruber (125), middle school, placed sixth.

Hoisington baseball sweeps twin bill

LYONS - Hoisington's Isaac Prosser started and ended the game-winning rally, and earned a save to preserve a thrilling 8-7 comeback over Lyons to sweep a Central Kansas League baseball doubleheader. The Cardinals won the opener 18-3. The Cardinals play at Kingman April 3.

Larned baseball splits doubleheader

LARNED - Larned pitcher Alex Barger keyed a second-game 7-4 victory over Kingman to earn a split of Tuesday's Central Kansas League baseball doubleheader. Kingman routed the Indians 16-1 in the opener. The Indians travel to Hillsboro Tuesday.
