VICTORIA - Larned's Danyon Green placed 25th in the boys division to lead the Indians runners Saturday at the Class 4A cross country regional at the Sand Plum Course. Larned placed sixth in the boys standings with 167 points. Larned's other runners who counted were Thomas Harmon, 26th, 17:35.48; Justin Giesbrecht, 37th, 17:49.1; Nicholas Orth, 38th, 17:49.46; and Kristopher Nolde, 41st.
STERLING - Hoisington freshman Dayne Yott placed 16th (17:47.09) to lead the Cardinals in the Class 3A cross country regional at Sterling Country Club. The Cardinals placed 13th with 292 points. Also counting for the Cardinals were Brinttain Noah, 50th, 19:53.46; Andrew Rincon, 71st, 21:27.21; Dylan Carrier, 84th, 24:11.93; and Braden Konzem, 86th, 25:20.47.
WICHITA – Regional medalist Kerby Depenbusch (16:13.0) led Great Bend to third-place and a spot in the Class 5A state cross country championship at Lawrence's Rim Rock Farms. Erik Vazquez placed third (16:36.0).
CLAFLIN – Central Plains scored three defensive touchdowns to clinch an Eight-Man I playoff berth with a 58-0 football victory over St. John. Central Plains (8-0, 4-0 District) will play South Central (7-1) or Argonia-Attica (7-1) in the Eight-Man 1 playoffs.
MEADE – St. John's boys qualified for the Class 2A state cross country championship with a runner-up finish (64 points) behind Stanton County (56) at Meade Golf Course. St. John's A.J. Miller placed ninth (18:25.69). Also counting were Remington Walker, 11th, 18:32.03; Quincy Smith, 12th, 18:46.35 ; Wrangler Walker, 15th, 18:49.88; and Triston Long, 16th, 18:53.21
ST. JOHN – No. 1 ranked Central Plains cruised past Ellinwood 25-16, 25-16 to capture the Class 2A St. John substate volleyball championship. The Oilers (36-2) captured last year's Class 2A state title with a 43-0 record. Ellinwood upset No. 2 seed Inman in the semifinals.
Great Bend has qualified for the state football championship one time in 2006 when the Panthers lost 34-3 to Stilwell-Blue Valley in the Class 5A finals. Coach Bo Black coached the Panthers to seven playoff trips from 2002 to 2010.
