MANHATTAN - Great Bend's Eric Vasquez and Larned's Mason Schartz won primary elections for a state office at the 2016 American Legion Boys State of Kansas Leadership Academy (ALBSKLA) Monday. Vasquez is running for Attorney General. Schartz is a candidate for Commission of Insurance.

TOPEKA - Senator Mitch Holmes (R-St. John) said family considerations factored into him "retiring" from the Kansas State Senate's 33rd District. Holmes withdrew his name for the August primary in the 33rd District.

WICHITA - Otis-Bison's Taylor Regan captured the Class 1A long jump championship with a leap of 16-9. Regan placed third in the Class 1A triple jump (34-61/4).

Great Bend hurdler a Class 5A state runner-up

WICHITA - Great Bend's Jeffery Muiruri ran a season-best time (38.96) and placed runner-up in the Class 5A 300-meter hurdles at Cessna Stadium. Muiruri qualified with the fourth-fastest time (39.58), but moved up two spots in the finals.

Ellinwood girls play for state title

PRATT - Ellinwood stunned perennial powerhouse Udall 11-10 Friday to qualify for the school's first-ever Class 2A state softball championship. Ellinwood led 9-5 before Udall rallied for a 9-9 tie. Ellinwood rallied for the victory. The Eagles (20-3) play Valley Falls (21-4) in Friday's state championship
