EMPORIA - Great Bend junior Kelby Titus started slowly, but finished strong with a 13th-place tie (78) at Emporia Municipal Golf Course Monday. Play was delayed three hours because of rain and lightning.
WICHITA - Five-time Class 5A defending champion Wichita Carroll breezed past Great Bend 10-0 in the regional softball championship game Wednesday. Carroll (22-0) has won 72 consecutive games the past three seasons.
LARNED - Top-seeded Larned defeated Lakin 8-1 in the regional championship game to qualify for the Class 3A state baseball tournament. Larned (17-3) qualifies for the Class 3A state tournament at Manhattan
Great Bend baseball coach Randy Beck knew Arkansas City's Hunter O'Toole was an effective pitcher. O'Toole lived up to his reputation with a dominating 2-1 victory over the Panthers in the Class 5A regional at the Great Bend Sports Complex.
HAYS - Larned's poor baserunning haunted the Indians in a 7-5 regional softball loss to Plainville-Stockton Wednesday. The Indians had three runners doubled off base on infield pop flies and two others tagged out at home and third base.
RUSSELL - Hoisington pitcher Jacob Warnken struck out four batters and pitched to contact to work through five perfect innings. But everything went south in the sixth inning when Nickerson rallied for a 5-3 Class 4A-Division 2 regional baseball victory.
